What Gouges to Buy?

Topic tags/keywords: spoons gouge question carving tool

The Boss(wife) says…can you make spoons like this? Took one out to the shop, cut it out sanded and it looked good except for the cut out on the spoon. Too much work. I guess I need some gouges. What do i buy. She wants a bunch of them for gifts. Great way to use up scrap it seems.

There is a guy in my local woodworkers club who is known as “the spoon guy”. He makes a lot of wooden spoons and spatulas and similar projects.

His primary tool is a inflatable bowl sander like this – -

In fact, on most smaller spoons, this is the only gouging out tool he uses.

As an FYI – He does most of his work with maple.
