Hi all,

I have two of this vise style and was hoping to make new wooden jaws, but it may be impossible to get the hardware apart. Is the sleeve on the handle side attached to the spindle by a screw which has then been hammered flat, or is this a rivet? I tried pounding it out from below but it didn’t move. I could add a metal plate to spread the load and surround the old jaw with a new jaw but it may not be worth it. Thoughts?

maybe rather than hammering it, tap and rive a hole in it, make the vise stationary and put a lever on the exposed screw, I don’t know just an idea. I wouldn’t cover up the old jaw if you cant get it off.

Could there be something in between those sandwiched pieces of wood that holds everything together? In other words, what is between the beveled piece vs. the thicker chop? I’d (carefully) pry those apart if they’re nailed, removed the screws if they’re screwed, and go from there.

I agree with Smitty. That’s two piece for a reason.

I think you have half a vise. The other half would
be the guide rods and a nut for that threaded
shaft at the end of them.

If the threads stop before the chop then that might be a sign as well.
