Topic tags/keywords: moose antler steel v carbide gloves or not fun

Hey yall, I started this just to be the 17 hundredth topic for wood turning. But, I’m posting a video of turning a Moose Antler to flatten it on the edges so it will sit flat. That will come in about 2 hours. I have to upload it to youtube….. Jerry (in Tucson)

Here is the link to the video. Nothing special, but at least I tried….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKiqOzYhe_w&feature=youtu.be

I started using a freshly sharpened Thompson 5/8” gouge, but after some time, I noticed a small nick on the edge. I then went to carbide. Wow, that made a huge difference.

Unfortunately for me, I ran out of space on my video card. For all who watched the video, that might be a blessing….... hehehe …..... Jerry (In Tucson)

Hey guys, I didn’t quit. I just ran out of video card. Also, I thought it would smell, but surprisingly, it didn’t. When I start sanding, I know it will stink up the place for a couple days..

Arduous task?? What? That was probably the easiest and most stable thing I’ve ever mounted and turned. The biggest problem was the small pieces hitting my hand as it came off the antler. That was painful, and the only time I wished I was wearing gloves..

Rick, I’m going to knap a knife, and use this as a resting place for it. Thanks for the comments. ............. Jerry (in Tucson)
