Yesterday I received an interesting little package from Denmark. It was from Mads, a LJ friend and also a personal friend.
Last year I was in Denmark to put my Dad to rest. He was 92 and ready to go to Valhalla. My dad was a pipe smoker, I gave it up many years ago, and knowing that Mads was a pipe smoker I gave my dads pipes to him.

The package.

The Stem.

The Bowl.

The bowl with the lint.

Bowl showing the tobacco.

Inside the package I found one of my Dads old pipes transformed into a fire starter.
The pipe body has a knife inserted into it. The stem has the fire stick glue in. In the bowl of the pipe is some lint to use as kindling. This lint was covering some of my Dads tobacco. I recognized the smell.

I have tried it and it shoots sparks all over the place.

Also inside the package was a note from Mads, written in his typical architecual hand writing. Translation to follow.

Hi Thomas:
Here is a fire starter in remembrance of you Dad.
In the mouthpiece is the fire steel. In the pipe a knife to scrape the the steel with and some lint as a starter.
Last but not least, some of your dads tobacco just so that the smell will bring back memories.

Regards Mads.

To me this just blew me away.

All I can say right now is wow.

Thank you Mads for the wonderful gift. It will always remind me of my dad.

By the way my name is Thomas but nickname ,growing up in Denmark, was Mads. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Thomas,
It is sad your father was put to rest, but wonderful how your father in this way can keep on making a difference and have touched our souls in a good way.
So happy the pack arrived, was a wee afraid since I did not send it signed for.
Yes even we are living so fare from each other a friendship and real life meetings have come to life and I am sure it will be like that in the future, thanks.
(It is also a fine igniter for gas burners, I use mine on hikes).
Best of my thoughts my friend,
