I recently won an auction for an older powermatic 160 planer. A 1200lb beast. It has a 3 phase 5hp motor.

Questions I have:

Best way to power this via my 220 single phase? I think a rotary phase converter is the best route but I think it has to be a 10hp to properly work. I could source a 5hp single phase, would that work?

How do I run straps correctly around it to lift it off a pallet with a forklift in order to set it back down on a steel frame with casters I’m gonna make? I don’t want to run straps around the piece and bend something.

What is the FLA of the motor? Most likely, you can use something like this TECO (westinghouse) VFD – for about $200. Another option would be to go with a static phase converter, but you will reduce the horesepower a bit going that route. An RPC is overkill if you only have the one machine, and is kind of a PITA in that situation.

For lifting guidance, I would suggest calling PM directly. I find their tech service guys to be knowledgable and helpful.

Forgot about the lifting part!

You may find some useful information over at the OWWM site, such as this thread:

Asking Powermatic isn’t a bad idea either :)
