I am building a cabin and installed these 4×6 red cedar columns about 8 months ago. Now that I am toward finishing the cabin and add stain I noticed this black… dirt or mold. Any suggestions on what I can apply to these columns before I stain? Thanks for the help! |

Try sanding a small area and see how it looks. If the black is in the wood it may very well be mold, but I wouldn’t think so with Cedar. If the sanded area looks good, then sand the rest of them and go ahead with your stain. If you think it is mold, you can clean them with bleach. Let dry and then sand and stain. |

I am not sure what you have but if you feel it is mold: http://removemoldguide.com/do-it-yourself/remove-mold-from-wood/ http://www.mold-advisor.com/blue-mold.html -- Wuddoc |
