Topic tags/keywords: question planer

I came into quite a bit of Black Walnut, White Oak and Red Oak boards. I currently don’t have a planer and am relatively new to woodworking. My wife and I are building a home and I will do a major portion of the woodwork except kitchen cabinets.

My background is tool and die. I’m looking at a Jet JWP-15HH and a Grizzly G0453ZW. Both have helical heads. Price is important but I’m not looking at it yet. Cost per board is more important.

Does anyone have experience with these 2 machines? Are there others to consider? Powermatic and Jet are Sister companies now… I believe.

I have the Grizzly with straight blades and can attest it has been a durable no-frills workhorse. The only problem it has suffered is a leaking transmission gasket – about a drip a week. Just enough to leave a spot on my floor but not enough to wrestle the mess necessary to replace a $1 gasket.

Have your say...
