Topic tags/keywords: plane refurbishing

Hello guys,
I came across a nice Sargent 714-C hand plane in an antique store a few days ago for $20 and I had to take it. It has all the parts including the original iron and only a broken tote to contend with.
I have removed all of the surface rust and as I am looking through all of the pieces, and can see a yellow hue on some of the parts. All of the pictures I’ve seen of this plane restored don’t appear to have any brass. I took a polishing wheel to the head of one of the pieces and all I get is gray. I feel like I remember a little bit of surface rust around the head of one of these bolts but I’m not sure, and I know that brass doesn’t rust, it tarnishes. Man I wish I’d taken a “before” picture but I didn’t.
I can’t seem to find any information about these old planes that would confirm if this particular plane had brass pieces. I’ve included some pics below so you can see what I see. Any ideas?

The large knurled adjuster will be metal. I’ve never seen one as brass. The tote nut will depend on vintage. Some were steel and some were brass.

It can be polished whether it’s steel or brass.
