I have the opportunity to pick up a Steel City 20” Planer #40285 with the 20” knives (not helical head). The guy is selling all his machines and closing down his shop. He’s asking a fair price $1000 considering it’s a 20” planer and is only 3 months old. I went to look at it today and it’s in nice shape. I’ve been reading that “Steel City Tool Works” is now closed down? How hard would it be to get parts for if something broke? Are there similar machines out there that share the same parts? Interested in other people’s thoughts. Would you buy this machine? Thanks

I think Steel City went out of Business 1.5yrs ago so it must of been old new stock. I not sure about the parts, look at other manufacturers to see who has a simular machine. I have a SC 3hp jointer and found parts in Canada, (Craftax). It was kinda of PIA but I Have Co-workers who live in Windsor CA Good luck on your decision.

I have a craftsman hybrid table saw that is identical to the steel city saw. I believe they were manufactured by orion. A little research may find the actual manufacturer of the steel city planer and a way to get parts. Good luck.

With Steel City being out of business and trying to get parts later down the line, I’ve decided not to go get it. I also don’t like the urethane outfeed roller on that machine. Oh well, let someone else have fun with it. I’ll keep my eye out for a used Grizzly or Jet 20” Planer. Better yet…...a Powermatic!

Have your say...
