I’m new to woodworking and I’m thinking about improving the bench I have with a better top. Can someone tell me the advantages of two vises rather than one? What is the best type of vise or does that depend on what I will be using it for most of the time? I have one vise and I know what I want for the second one but may be looking at the wrong type based on what I want to build most of the time. I’m new to Lumberjocks so I hope I have posted this in the right place.

Check out the workbench smack down thread here. You’ll get lots of idea there. I watch constantly. It’s where I go to collect ideas for my, hopefully soon, bench build.

It depends very strongly on what it will be used for. Check out the thread BurlyBob suggested and get one of Christopher Schwarz’ books on workbenches. He has thorough and comprehensive explanations of the types of vises and what each excels at.
