Hello There,

I live in Houston (near the middle). I don’t know anyone that does any kind of woodworking, and am curious about a few things:

-Are there any clubs/groups that are worth belonging to? Are there any associated benefits (discounts at lumberyards etc)?

-I’ve been to Houston Hardwoods several times, have not yet visited Clarks (though given the 290 shitshow I may check them out next time I need wood). Any other places worth knowing about for lumber?

-Any good places for fixtures/hardware other than Rockler and Home Depot/Lowes (obvs online)?

FYI I’m not into the “folksy” side of woodworking, and I’m relatively young (not as young as I used to be, though), so any groups with that orientation aren’t for me.

I use almost exclusively hand tools (ex drill and circular saw), and my ambitions are to progress from relatively simple cabinet making into fine furniture such as Finn Juhl type chairs, etc. Over a very long period of time. I can only devote a few hrs per week to my hobbies.

Missed this the first time around, but here are some ideas:

Clubs: – seems like a good group, but I don’t get down there often as they are a long way from my end of town. – heard good things about this group, but only recently starting turning and haven’t been to see them.

My assessment of the west side shops for hardware:
Rockler – pricey, but when bench cookies go on sale I go down there. Sometimes they have good deals on sale.

Woodcraft – The SW one is my general go to store. I find the guys who work there are a lot more willing to shoot the breeze than the Rockler guys. But there are generally more of them around as well. They’ve also been super for little things (like when I brought my birthday coupon in a week to late).

Lumberyards: I really only go to these two-
Houston Hardwoods – Better variety of species, lots of rough sawn stock. If you don’t mind milling your own stock, you can get a good deal here. I especially like the 100 BF discount when they pick it. They basically just pull from the top, but if you spend a few minutes talking to the guy who’s doing the pull and nicely ask for no really bad stock, they’ll avoid the really bad stuff. Good selection of turning blanks of all different stuff. Will knock off reasonable amount for stock with major knots or defects. Has their QSWO separated out.

Hardwood Products – These guys stock some rough stock, but a lot of their stuff is S2S. Good pricing on several species for S2S lumber. Only issue is that the S2s is going to be 7/8” or so and they don’t always have reasonable 5/4 stock to get a full inch if needed. Good pricing on plywood, including BB. I think these guys are more suppliers to professional shops, so their wood tends to be closer to ready to use. They also have more long boards (10+ footers)

I usually try to go by each place once a month and pick up the price lists. Then I go through and figure out which place has the better deal on the wood for upcoming projects.

I’m fortunate to have some buddies on the NW side who do woodworking, but I know there are a lot of guys out there. May just be my perception, but maybe not too many guys on LJ from our area.

I live close to the Town & Country area, which is sometimes called west memorial. I am not aware of any groups, but will now check those links posted by Mike.

With regard to the Rockler and Woodcraft stores Mike wrote about, I think he has nailed it so I have nothing to add.

We brave few LJ’s here in Houston should make an effort to go down and meet up at one of the WWCH or GC Turners meetings.
