Topic tags/keywords: carving question

I rescued this piece of firewood last year and have been storing it in the garage since then. Something about the shape caught my eye. Anyway, i finally broke out the turbo plane and cleaned it up a bit following the grain to see what was under the bark.

So the question is what does it want to be? My wife things it would make a nice table lamp, but i was thinking about just leaving it as an art piece. What do you think?

Who says a lamp can’t be a work of art? Who says a work of art can’t be a lamp? With the right finishing touches it could be both. Take your inspiration from the likes of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Rene Lalique, Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene & Greene, etc. – all of them produced objects of stunning beauty that also serve a useful function. You don’t have any projects posted so I do not know what your particular style might be, but good luck and keep us posted.

Looks like it already something. Nice looking piece of wood. Make to look like a wisdom tooth (already looks like it) with gems in the holes and sell it to a dentist office.

Well, it’s already a pencil/toothbrush holder so until you can bring yourself to destroying it for another project, use it as that.

Thanks for the comments guys…

@fancyShoes, That’s funny.

@leafherder. You’re right! FLW is one of my favorites, and certainly he combined function and art… I’ve been lurking here for awhile and I’m just getting started playing with wood (made a few things for the house) but hopefully I’ll have some projects to post in the not too distant future…

@mrjinx, you’re right, it does look like a tooth.

@Mudflap. A pencil holding lamp… I”m sure my daughter would like that on her desk!

I was thinking of that being a walnut crusher.
