long narrow box design

My brother wants a long narrow box to store some knives in, about 3’ x 9” x 9”. My question is for the long side is there a drawback to having it made from a single piece of wood? If one pices is acceptable is there a miinimum thickness i should have for the wood? I would be using some sort of hardwood to make it.

The Box is 3 ft long? that’s long enough for a sword. If it’s that long you want it a minimum of 1/2” thick and even better at 3/4”.
