I believe due to the expansion of the internet and for many people who frequent forums, newsgroups, message boards, etc., displaying ones real name could be problematic. With the ever increasing number of weirdos in our world and using the internet as their main source of contact nowadays, saying the wrong thing can really set someone’s fire ablaze. Using a real name can help them locate you if they are that psychotic and want to do harm.

Perhaps it seems a bit paranoid but I’ve actually witnessed this type of act and would advise most people to use anonymity, especially if they frequent the internet abundantly.

I found my real name to be quite a common one… (Robert Lee) so I decided to find something unique that nobody would ever use, and I get it no matter what forum or website i go to.

Hi GMman,
Perhaps this is a good place to introduce my desire to know how many Canadians there are in Lumberjocks. Not for any ulterior reason, just a matter of interest. I keep stumbling on more and find there are a few such as you that are quite close to New Brunswick. Just found Mark in Windsor for instance. You could say a pet peeve of mine. My nick name (Jackass) came from necessity when I registered with LJ”S. Hope you get your answer.

I agree with Meanie. A lot of us likely do frequent other forums in various other hobbies, so we are used to other online identities.

I just joined today, but Cosmicsniper is a reference to my other hobby, astrophotography.
