FYI: Steel City 40300H - 0 replies

Hi All, While searching for replacement cutters for this planer I noticed Highland Woodworking was out of them. Then I noticed SC no longer sells this planer which got me to wondering…am I stuck with a planer I can no longer get cutters or support for? I emailed SC and to their credit they responded rather quickly with a source for cu...

Craftsman Bandsaw Mod - 3 replies

I have a Craftsman Band saw model 119.224010. The predecessor to the current BAS350. Tensioning blades wider than 1/2” requires a super grip on the tensioning knob. Furthermore there is no tension quick release on this machine. I looked at the tensioning knob and how it interfaces. I discovered that a 3/8” exte...

Update on my Bandsaw Find - 4 replies

Hi All, In reference to my bandsaw find in topic I thought I would update everyone on how it is working out. I still believe I got a really great deal at $275 for a barely used Craftsman 119224010 14” Bandsaw with a few extra blades. Here is what I encountered in setting up this saw for my own use...

*** TOOL GLOAT *** Look what I got for $275!!! - 12 replies

These are pictures BEFORE I cleaned it up! The table needs a little TLC, other than that the guy used it only a handful of times and it has been sitting idle for a couple of years! He gave me 3 additional blades as well.

Habitat ReStore Score - 5 replies

Sometimes I browse at the ReStore if I’m on that side of town. I have just completed a nightstand for my wife’s side of the bed and I’m going to build one for my side. I used 14” full extension BB slides for hers. Guess what I found a box of at the ReStore? Yep, 14” full extension BB slides. They wanted $1 for ...

How many Poplar fans here? - 27 replies

For some reason I like Poplar…with just a clear coat. The greenish hue eventualy turns brown and I like the contrasting streaks in some of the boards. I guess for me I find that the natural variations in wood add interest, while others find a uniform color/grain more pleasing. In every other aspect of my life I like symmetry, but not wh...

Curious Question for Hobbyists: Do you make plans for your work? - 104 replies

I ask only out of curiosity. I plan out my projects very carefully usually recording my basic plans on graph paper. Then my spare mental cycles are obsessed with construction techniques and sequencing. Usually when I head out to my shop I have already hyper-analyzed my next steps so I don’t often find myself in a pickle. If I do itR...

Steel City 40300H Planer Snipe - 12 replies

Does anyone else who owns this planer experience snipe? I have 1.5 to 2” at each end of a board. I have tried all kinds of adjustments to no avail…so I live with it. But should I? I don’t expect not to have any snipe but is this reasonable? It’s the first planer I’ve ever owned so I don’t know. Otherwise...

Thien Baffle Separator - 0 replies

Here is my thien baffle Here is the result after several hours of jointing, planing, and ripping I’m amazed at how well this thing works. There was barely a tablespoon of material in the DC bag until I noticed my can was full!

Nightstand Top Attachment - 8 replies

Hi All, I’m building a cherry nightstand and the top on it will be 18”x24”. I know for large tops (like tables) clips or some other form of loose joinery is used to accommodate wood movement. Is this type of attachment necessary for a top this size or can I just attach it with screws? I’ve made some bookcases wher...

How/When To Remove Excess Glue from Glue-ups - 28 replies

I’ve already done a few projects but I always wonder: how and when should I remove excess glue from glue-ups? I usually wipe off as much excess glue as I can with a damp sponge immediately after I clamp. What I’m wondering is does this force glue into the grain enough to affect staining? I know on some projects it is obvious glue ...
