Workshop 2016

It came to pass...

The end of this past year saw the essential death of what was to have been a tiny shop/shed workshop. I went over ten months without completing or even beginning a single woodworking project and at the beginning of the year I was convinced it would be a VERY long time before that was to change but….it apparently all came to pass with my grandparents contacting me to let me know they had found me a tablesaw that a widow was parting with a few years after her woodworking husband had passed. As anyone with limited funds and high aspirations with their hobby will tell you that you never, ever, ever say no to free. Now let me introduce you to the beauty that I have been blessed to have been given even though it was left unattended for five years and had to subsequently be moved 100miles while being exposed to the elements of rain on an interstate.

Wood Table Automotive exterior Bumper Wood stain

It has since shined up well after enduring it's adventure in getting home and having it's heavy tail unloaded to the new workshop space that has opened up over the past few months.

Road surface Wood Asphalt Floor Flooring

A little automotive sandpaper sanding, lots of dry lube buffing and finally a setting coat of wd40 she is ready for some work!

Wood Wood stain Hardwood Gas Composite material

...and yes this last image was BEFORE the sanding to remove any surface rust that could've started pitting that glorious steel top!

Congrats on the new saw! An easy project that will help out with the saw is making some zero clearance inserts.

Can't wait to see a shined up picture.

It is definitely a tease; you can't give it all away at once. Other blog posts will be coming to catch us up to where the new shop is today.

Did the jointer come with it or is it just sitting close?

It's actually manufactured into the saw. Makes it insane to load and unload as the weight is anything but centered.

Christmas blessings.

Christmas 2015 was one that held many changes for me and inherently for my woodworking too. In the past my family has been pretty diligent in purchasing tools for me of all sorts and has filled in the gaps of those items that are required for pushing my skills upwards. However, the larger sized powertools have always been slightly out of reach for me by way of monetary limitations or just that my family didn't feel comfortable making a purchase that requires a lot of knowledge. I.E. how big of a throat do you want on that bandsaw? Not a lot of people automatically know to ask about such a detail for a gift like that.

Publication Flooring Font Room Advertising

As you can see in the image I absolutely was blown away at my girlfriend's gifts this Christmas. I mentioned wanting the ability (not to have her purchase) to get just one powertool to help me grow in my compentency of working with wood. I am extremely blessed that she has been as excited as me about the future projects we will be able to work towards…it's my equivalent of her watching football with me :)

It all goes toward that rebirth of my workshop from having no true tools to work with and essentially losing my ability to have a space to work in to suddenly have received so much so quickly. It fuels my desire to want to make things that my family and friends will not expect and can use and cherish for years to come. I see ANY tool that I'm given as an opportunity for me to create something that is just that much better because of their choice to help me along my path in my hobby.

Onward and upward!

Now that the new year has started I'm getting entangled in fine tuning my new space and all the daydreams that go along with it. The table saw has had a few small, short runs checking the fence and installing risers to my assembly table so that it can learn a new trick as an out feed table! I had a small bit of oak ply laying around and it works out perfect to add just the right height I needed to the table.

As you'll see it's just barely below the table saw top so the piece will hopefully have less of a chance to bind up.

The table saw top has also shined up pretty well considering how it originally started and I've had a comment about wanting a before and after so, here it is for your review. I'm probably going to end up doing another sanding just because it's the focal point of the work area but that can definitely wait until after everything else is setup and working well.

I've also had a couple of requests/commissions that I am starting on this week for a vinyl record display like bookcase and a pantry door shelving unit. My fingers are crossed that both can be done this week but I'm also realistic about how plans can be adjusted against you.

Ironic little encourager

These past few months have disappeared beneath me. I've learned some new skills in the shop and have been cranking out projects but all of the rest of my life has become more demanding of my time. Ironically my daughter has saved my woodworking hobby in that she has become more and more eager to help me with projects even at the age of four. So, the times that me and her do have together she actively asks what I'm working on and what I have planned next. I'm blessed by her and my girlfriend who encourages my woodworking outlet in ever possible way.

Petal Creative arts Pink Flower Arranging Flower

Just as small a project as this is it was something my daughter needed and could physically help me do.

Table Chair Building Desk Engineering

She has even begun taking responsibility in the shop by cleaning after we are done for the day…and yes she has her own set of safety gear (goggles, gloves, and ear protectors) besides knowing the rules of what to touch and when.

Just as I love impressing my girlfriend with new pieces for the house I have found another joy in sharing my skills with my daughter too.

Take all the time you can with your Daughter in the Shop as well as out of the shop. But that time in the shop will be priceless as time goes on even if she doesn't stick with it for long.

Feelin the flow

Believe it or not I've survived these past nearly six months in the new space with only two open outlets! It has been a completely trying experience with the back and forth of plug ins and then outs as I've moved from equipment to equipment. It has, however pushed me to do more at once and plan ahead more. I've learned new tricks and have been forced to build a crosscut sled instead of relying on my miter saw so often. I'm appreciative for the results of this electrical fact but I'm also ecstatic that I now have new outlets to NOT have to plug anything else in over and over again!
Grey Rectangle Wood Gas Font

For anyone that hasn't installed the new GFCI outlets let me tell you now that the wire locations absolutely matter. I found that out the hard way with me and a general contractor working to get these three outlets tied in. Already I've been over the moon having more options for equipment and less danger of not having cords strewn across the shop.

So lastly to all the electricians out there wiring new homes, please for the love of everyone ignore that idea that homeowners don't really need outlets all over the garage. Please.

Breathing easier

Pretty quickly a hobby woodworker realizes how uncomfortable it is to come back into your home with a nose full of sawdust never mind how that same dust permeates every inch of your workspace. It coats every inch with a fine mist and means more cleanup later which just add to the annoyance. I don't currently have a dust collection system and I don't even mind the heavy sawdust that falls immediately to the floor but I couldn't stand the small stuff filling my sinuses as it has for years now. Thankfully I had acquired two good blower fans that I retrofitted into a custom cabinet to make a shop air filter.

After wiring, testing the airflow and making sure the innards of the cabinet were tight I cut a simple French cleat to hang the unit to the overhead beam you'll see in the image. Without that cleat it would've become a feat to screw that heavy cabinet in place, overhead. I had a remote outlet control, unused, in the house so it became my on and off as I took advantage of the open outlet for the garage door motor.

So far I've noticed a dramatic difference in the air quality and more importantly how my nose feels when I've spent long sessions out there. I can simply look at the filters and know it's making an improvement to me enjoying my time building.

Not sure how much the blower fans cost but I'm very aware what other companies want for their air filters that are similar!
