Ok, so A1Jim and I were catching up on things, and a thought crossed my mind, if you could live anywhere and the ultimate woodshop, and just happened to call it "Woodtopia" what would your vision of this be?

Deep in the woods of the great northwest, close to nature off the grid? Over in the Adirondacks so you could sell your creations to the wealthy folks of the city? Or would you become a hermit and not share your treasures with anyone (except the folks here on Lumberjocks of course)

Here's a start of my vision: it would be a large place surround by large trees, with a HUGE covered workshop that would have plenty of spaces for people to come and work on whatever project they wanted. This way ideas could flow freely in the community and inspire everyone.

I've seen a PBS special about glass blowing that has a community like this, its a great learning center and after watching it, I've put it on my "Bucket List".

Ok so everyone send in your dollar, so we can start buying up property somewhere and build this Woodtopia!

In woodtopia I would work outside year round under a shelter (like a picnic shelter). I would not have to worry about the weather damaging my equipment and it would be secure enough that I could leave the machines in the shelter all the time. The shelter would protect me from the sun but I would have comfortable, gentle breezes year round.

The workshop would be somewhat isolated on a hill side with an incredible view of the Russian River Valley about 70 miles north of the Golden Gate bridge.

Huge indoor space with ooodles of open-able windows and skylights. Benches by each window for others to work on.
Heated wood floor, 12' high ceilings, well insulated. Large DC's with drops at each bench and a few wide mouth openings at floor level for sweeping into.
A few flat, level, and stable assembly tables.
An engineered finishing room.
A dog and a cat.

Somewhere out in Western Marin County, north of San Francisco. Close enough to civilization but secluded with great views, lots of tall trees, and PERFECT weather year-round.

A barn-like enclosure, huge, with ceilings allowing the construction of grander projects if needed (e.g. spiral staircases!). Like Gene said, lots and lots of windows and skylights. Maybe even a massive retractable skylight roof. :)

I think my woodtopia would be in the middle of an area like Alaska were there are trees and rivers all around but it has weather like southern California and my shop would be large enough to have lots of friends come by and build what ever we want. Even though the nearest neighbors house would be 500 miles away. we would have plenty of room for all.
Is this a new Disney film or what? LOL
