Ok guys, my brother-in-law was in an auto accident where the medical bills have proven to be very expensive. Family and Friends have decided to hold a benefit auction on his behalf. I've been commissioned to build a wood project that could be sold at the auction. The auction willl be held in a rural area…so nothing too modern or progressive…lots of farmers, relgious folks, etc. in this area. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could build? I was thinking more on the lines of intarsia, segmentation, fretwork clocks, etc. And I need something that I could build in 2-3 weeks worth of weeknights and weekends. Any suggestions of projects or good pattern websites would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and I'm on a fairly limited budget of $50 or less…but I want to get max return for my budget.

There aer some nice wildlife scenes that can be scrolled. That would likely appeal to the rural farmer angle. also tractors or local landmarks might be fun. If you stack cut a portrate you could give one to your brother and one to the auction.

I was in the local lumber yard last fall and one of the managers pulled out a cross he had bought from a customer. It has blonde wood (3/4) on the front with 1/4 inch darker wood on the back. The edges were routers. This was a simple lap joint cross. Then on the front there were 4 nails. He had alternated them head up verticle, head right horiz. head down vert and head left . he had taken some new romex and stripped it for the copper wire. He had wrapped several wraps around the nails and then he had drilled through the face and pulled the wires back and tied them. Now this guy was selling them for $15 but I built one for my wife and I would starve to death building these and selling them at that price. My wife loves hers. In our farming/religious community people have walls in a room covered with crosses so they are popular. The nails are about 3/16 inches in dia. by 8 and 10 inches long. These could be knocked out fairly quickly if you mass produced them. Of course they would sell for more if there were only a couple of them.
