I am trying to expand my skills and would like to try….real wood. Not the Home Depot stuff. I mean real cherry, walnut, zebrawood, etc. I live in Los Angeles, and probably like most people, I have a day job and make sawdust on the nights and weekends. I know of one very good lumber yard in LA which, unfortunately is open M - F (boo).

If you live in LA tell me, where do you go to buy real wood? And a more generic question for the LJ community, if you use mail order word suppliers, which ones have you been satisfied with?

Hi I am originally from LA (lower Atlanta hahaahaa) I have a place here in Baltimore called Free State Timber. If its wood, they got it. Not that you are here and can enjoy MY favorite little place, but how i found them may help you. Dont be fooled-you cannot buy lumber online cheaper than picking it up locally. ONce you calculate the shipping cost into the lumber, the cost skyrockets. Do that math before getting lumber online, no matter how good the deal looks. AND, you cant inspect your material prior to purchase either. Anyhoo-the way i found these guys was yellowpages.com and typed in the search, lumber or wood. It was well worth my time to find these guys who sell Maple (my favorite) for about $4 a board foot. Just my 2 cents for ya.

I agree with Todd. I want to buy my lumber locally as much as I can. You might want to try Craigslist. I am not in your area, but I have had great success. I found a man not too far away who mills and dries the trees on his property.

Last weekend, I went to a man who had given up on his cabinet shop. This is the last thing that I want to see happen to someone, but we came to a deal that was fair for us both. I got a load of beautiful black walnut, and he got some much-needed cash.

I wish they had one of those for Canada. You'd think there would be suppliers everywhere - considering that Canada has all sorts of wood - like the flatulent elm of saint eisley in BC….

I have a lot of people around me who make wood things but the suppliers are few & far between.

I get my lumber from Wibles, ll Johnson's Workbench, oak tree woodworking, my woodworking club and a friend. The cheapest price is my friend can't beat free.

I go to hardwood dealers. You can pick it over, and get what you want, rough to plane yourself, pre planed, different thicknesses, etc.

I looked up 'hardwood lumber dearlers near West Hills CA' and came up with tons of them.

For example, here's one about 30 minutes from you.
This webpage is the page that shows you they types of woods they carry. I don't know what their prices are but typically these places are about 2/3- 1/2 the price of big box stores and they often carry a dozen or more species.
