Hi all,

I keep attempting to make a beer mug and on my second attempt I got it completely turned and finished with beeswax. I then try the water test over night for 10 hrs just to make sure that it would hold. When I checked on it, this morning, I discovered I had created a modern art sculpture. 2 of the joints seemed to have catastrophically failed.

I was using Titebond II as recommended and it looks like the glue joints just completely separated. The glue up had sat for 48 hrs before I started to turn the mug. I then started to turn and left it on the lathe for a day or two and didn't finish it till about 4 days later. The entire time the mug was still in my basement shop so there shouldn't have been any temperature shock either. Now here is the question, what went wrong? Should I have used Titebond III instead or did something else possibly happen?

What went wrong is that you didn't use a water proof glue. If you had filled it with water and then drank it you would have been fine, but leaving it for ten hours allowed the wood the and glue joints to become completely saturated, TTBII has some resistance to water but it is not completely waterproof. Maybe epoxy would be a better choice for this application.

As Bondo has stated Titebond II is not meant for submersion. You need a glue that made for under water applications. Part of your problem may also be the type of wood your gluing together. If it's a wood that is oily then the glue may not penetrate the fibers enough to allow a secure bond. Same thing can happen if your wood has been burnt by a saw blade which again won't allow the glue to penetrate into the fibers.

TB III would be better than TB II but, neither is made for submerged continuous contact with water.

Epoxy would be a much better choice.
