I have begun to create a couch table that will be donated to a Veteran this year. It is being crafted from a spalted Elm live edge slab. It will have two trapezoid flat metal legs. There will be five inlayed military challenge coins in the top and will be finished with a clear pour top.

I will be adding pictures to this blog post, if I ever figure out how that process works. :p

So, as Andy told me, my wood is super soft. I knew it would be considering it is Spalted Elm. I had this nasty little tear out and I wanted to fill it, but did not like the idea of epoxy (clear or tinted). Since this is a Veteran's Day build I found some appropriate accent woods - Purple Heart and Blood wood. I hope the intention makes up for the lack of skill :p

This bowtie is made from blood wood. I had an area that cracked into the live edge and I had the idea to inset the bowtie into the slab top and contour it with the live edged front. Through numerous attempts at fitting the right bowtie and lots of hand sanding…. I ended up with this.

The recipient of this couch table is a Vietnam Vet that was awarded 2 - purple hearts. I am going to inlay these into the table top before sealing it and delivering it.
