The past few weeks around our household has been very exciting and eventful. On Jan 25th my wife had knee replacement surgery and last night my oldest son was admitted to the hospital with a severe case of ulcerative colitis. So, me being the nice guy that I am I took 3 weeks off work to stay home and take care of her and the kids. Little did I know that also included cooking, cleaning, shopping, getting the mail and other chores that I had forgotten about. I most definately have a new found and rekindled love for her. I had taken for granted all that she does and forgot how hard her 2nd job really is.

Now ya'll are saying what does all this have to do with and "unexpected surprise"? While in my multiple trips all over town today I stopped and picked up the mail. Now mind you the mailbox is a community box about 200 yards from the house. In the box was a key to open one of the other boxes where the PO places packages that are too large for the normal box. I grabbed the key and open the locker and there was a priority box with a familiar name as the sender. I put the box and the rest of the mail in truck and made a bee-line for the house.

I was thinking during the short drice what could be in the box? I hadn't ordered or requested anything. I ran in the house like a fat kid looking for the cake. I grabbed a kitchen knife, glad the wife wasn't home, and cut through the tape on the box. As I began to open the box I caught a slight glimpse of oak. Now what could this be and why am I getting it? I flung the top open and found this awesome handmade oak and maple square. The handle is oak, blade is maple and some nice, possibly mahogany, dowels pinning it all together. The blade is approx 12" in length and 2" wide and it feels really nice in the hand.

I vaguely remember a post of a project with some squares. So I looked it up on here and found that 3fingerpat had made some after reading an article in FWW but didnt have the time to get to it. I feel really honored and cant wait to see the square with a little BLO on it to bring out the grain in the maple. So, PAT, if you are reading this I really appreciate it and it is an awesome gesture and I wonder what I did to deserve this? The original post can be found here

This is a nice post, Ken. I really enjoy hearing stories like this. You both are winners in my book.

And I hope that the family is doing well. I am sure you are a better nurse than I would be. After 3 days I begin to lose patience with the patient. :)

It's always nice when Karma shows itself in such a way that you can't help but notice.

My best thoughts go to you and your family - I'm confident you will come out of all this stronger, wiser, and more appreciative of your life!

Pat thanks again. I really appreciate it. Hopefully one day I will be able to get in the shop and make some sawdust and maybe even send a repayment surprise your way.
Topomax….If Pat made it its square. I dont have to check it.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes and prayers. I hope that 2010 ends a whole lot better than it has started.

Good luck with your new job, Ken, I 'm in a somewhat similar place. - lol

Last Thursday (the day after her B-day), SWMBO fell and broke her leg in three places. After a day in the ER waiting for surgery, the orthopedist decided that since nothing had actually displaced, surgery wasn't really needed, so they immobilized her lower leg and we came home.

At 4:00 am Friday, she woke me for the third time that night to help her get to the bathroom. The loving thoughts were also being displaced by thoughts of homicide. - lol

Yesterday, I rented a wheelchair, bought groceries, did laundry, cooked supper, washed dishes, and brought her pain meds. I also postponed delivery of two jobs scheduled for yesterday and today. Last night, I jokingly suggested to our darlin' daughters that they should set up a rotation to assume some of this extra work. They collapsed in hysterical laughter and pointed out that 39 years ago I had signed up "for better or worse" and this counted as some of the "worse" part. They're right, of course, but I'm seeing my lawyer on Monday to cut the brats out of the will…................again. - lol
