Vega U-26 Fence Lock

1010 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  therealSteveN
I'm having issues getting a full lock on my Vega U-26 table saw fence. Unless I really wrench down hard on the locking handle it tends to loosen up and shift. Not much worse than a wandering table saw fence. Any tips or tricks?

Seems like there is a rash of U26's not locking. Strange for Vega, usually very well made.

Check the post here, it may get you right on topic, but is you don't see results, call Vega.

I had the exact same problem with my Vega. Had to force the lever down as hard as I could and it would still slip on occasion if there was any force at all against the fence. Finally tore it all down to see what was up. Found that over time lubricants that I'd used to keep the saw running smoothly combined with dust left deposits everywhere. The cam lock mechanism works best when there's clean bare metal to create the right amount of a friction hold. All I had to do is wash down the brass spring plate and cam lock with some acetone and light sanding. Then hit the tube with some steel wool to do the same. Now it locks like new.

Your cam is nice flat and clean. Mine is only a couple of months old and no lubricant of any kind used on fence lock or the rail.

That's my practically brand new cam.

Like I said in the other thread, there shouldn't be any reliance on friction to hold the cam in a locked position. The cam has to rotate far enough that the peak of the profile (the point on the edge that is the greatest distance from the center) rotates past the point of tangency with the rail.
Just got off the phone with Vega and they're sending me a new cam and pressure plate.
Awesome! I say grind away on the one you have in that case. If you get it working right, you'll have a backup. If you screw it up, you'll have a replacement :)
Yeah, he didn't say anything about wanting the old parts back.
Well, the new cam is in and the fence now locks solid as a rock. The difference between the two cams is like night and day. It looks like the finishing machining never happened on the old one. Thanks to everyone for your input!!!!!!
Awesome! Glad they stepped up with the CS and took care of the issue for you :)
