The leather ottoman project actually doesn't require a sewing machine at all.
And for the projects that do require a walking foot, maybe people have a friend or relative that will let them use the machine.
Even for those who will hire a pro, it's helpful to know what you want, and be able to speak the lingo with an upholsterer.
Even pros can do some hideous work if the Woodworker doesn't know what to ask for.

yeah i dd a stool once and wanted a cushion like the ottoman, my BIL says i know a guy,ill get you one made.totally screwed it up,it was a blocky cushion about 8" thick with square corners,i cut it down the best i could.lets say, he didn't speak the lingo-lol.Leather Upholstery

I've had good luck with using my rather inexpensive heavy duty singer sewing machine. (Model 4452) Itll only sew 2 layers of leather, so in the areas that you have to lap or do piping, it won't work, but that's just something to consider in the design phase . A cheap stitching awl works for those areas with >2 layers of leather also.

Lots of ways to get the work done.
The thinnest projects I sew are 3 layers of 2-3oz leather, so a home machine doesn't work for me.
Often my cushions are 4 layers thick, and sometimes double that if I'm sewing in backrest straps.
