Are the side rails of beds always a single piece lengthwise? Has anyone designed a bed where the side rails can be knocked down into two shorter pieces for easy handling/storage/transportation? What type of knock-down hardware can be used? What does it do the strength of the rail? I realize that the joint in the middle can be an eye sore, but there are probably ways to cover it up.

Garry,
That's a very nice design. For the design I have in mind, I don't have the option to make the footboard free standing as you have yours. But you did give me the idea of using the metal frame, I have to think if I can take advantage of that.
