Rough Bowls

Here are a few of the ROUGH bowls that have come off the lathe in the past few weeks (sorry about the lighting):

A small cherry bowl:

A slightly large, chunkier, and deeper cherry bowl:

I nabbed a number of chunks of the neighbor's maple that he was going to haul off. I tried to get ones with promise of figure. Here's one that I turned the other day - and don't I wish the whole blank had that curly figure!:

Nice work, Dorje! Bet the wife is going to love all those bowls for the kitchen. But, now she'll see you less than she did before you had the lathe!

I see your lovely wife got you a bigger lathe. Tres cool! Pam already has a lifelong get out of jail free card for getting me a 14" Bandsaw. I'm with Lee and Tom. Can't wait to see what comes off. Now I just wished I lived in Seattle so I could take a spin…

Thanks all -

I think I'll actually see more of my wife in the shop, because she has an interest in turning.

Douglas - how often does your wife go to jail? Also, too bad the cyber tool share doesn't work as well as it should! And shoot, Seattle and Omaha ain't that far apart!

Pam has a friend who lives on Mercer Island. If I'm ever in the neighborhood, I'll be sure and call!

Dorje,

Good work…looks like you will have lots of finish turning in your "queue" for the coming months!

Dorje,

Sweet! You're standing in tall cotton for sure with all of that Cherry. That probably sounds like I'm just a wee bit jealous… Nah, me? Well, truth be known, we get lots of Cherry down Texas way…NOT! I only get to turn Cherry once in a blue moon, and the old man in the moon does not seem to like the colour blue… :-(

Seriously, congrats. Cherry is a wonderful timber to work with… I just wish it grew in Texas! The maple is sweet as well and it doesn't grow here much either. Will they let red-headed Texan woodturners live in your parts? :) Take care and best wishes to you and yours!

Thanks guys!

Douglas - sounds like a plan!

Mark - and that's not all I got in my queue…need to learn to PRIORITIZE!

Steve - too funny! I'm sure the authorities would allow red-headed Texan woodturners in these parts. You'd have to pass the exam though!

Great job Dorje. I love your bowls. You are getting started down the road to lots of big wood shavings.

Hey Dorje,

Oh well, if there's a test, I guess I better stay in the heat and humidity capital of the known and unknown universe - Houston (we call it HOTston), Texas. I've done a bunch of demos in your neck of the woods… I love Seattle, it's a great place with really good coffee! :) You're a lucky bloke for sure. Take care and best wishes to you and yours!

More Rough Bowls and Blanks

Did some turning today…processed a number of maple rounds into bowl blanks…waxed the ends on the blanks and turned a few rough bowls with a few others.

This clunker has some pretty good figure - and some rot too! Not sure what I'm going to do about the rot..I think I need to fill it with something (not the void - but the punky wood). I recall that Douglas posted something on the subject. I'll have to track that down.

Some of the blanks had figure and some were spalted:
