Thanks for the video. I've thought about getting a Zyliss Vise (sometimes, I'd see them posted on craigslist), but I ventured instead for a Howard's Total Vise. https://www.totalvise.com/. These are US made and made of steel or cast iron. Quite versatile and you can make vacuum plate that works with their Total Positioner. I'll try to do a review on it soon.

I have been using a "Zyliss" (quoted as most are now cheap Chinese clones… most have even dropped the ZYliss tag)...

I reckon it is one of my better clamping systems in the workshop and I have quite a few varieties. I've never exploited their extra attachments and the only real extras I use are the jaws… especially the "aligator" jaws to hold round shapes… I actually have one (I have 3 of them) dedicated to hold an upside down ROS for those controlled sandings of small pieces.

If people could work around those bloody annoying ads, there are many workshop items that are a better waste of money than these clamps.

However, I will add, I've bought 5 all up (given 2 away) and it's incredible when I track the manufacturing quality from my 1st. to the last… Fortunately it's only cosmetic and the functionality still remains very similar.

Personally, this should be moved (or repeated) in the Review forum… Sometimes those annoying 3:00am "Where do you get it?" TV ads actually work.

I've been considering buying one of these for years. They're only about $125 on line, and work great for holding wood when one is carving. I built a new chest that would go below another chest when transporting my carving tools, and I'm going to look into whether or not that vise would fit in the bottom drawer, even though I built it for other contents.

By applying some patient Ebay bidding, I did get mine for a bit less. But, you are correct readily available at the price you mention. I didn't know if the vise was going to work for me, but knowing what I know now, I do believe $125 is a good deal for the Profi-King kit!

Ditto Jerroni, I haven't heard of them… not that its surprising as I inhabit Australia. Nevertheless a review would be great to inform the remaining mushrooms (kept in the dark) here at LJ.

While it seems more dedicated/"finicky" that other vises I've seen, it seems like a great addition to woodworkers' gripping arsenal.

Off your bummm (not inferring it's big) lightning... they are more versatile than you think, especially when it comes to portability… They will fit almost anywhere… a saw horse is an ideal candidate… however, be warned they do have a downside… best use is when mounted on the end of the "bench" so the crank handle hangs over the side for ease of use… placed in the middle is a PITA, much like piles of backlog.

Ducky, my "experience" with this vise comes from seeing one in action, used by an old German guy in my carving class. It's why I was cruising eBay in the first place, looking for one. I'm a skinflint, and only spend money when there is no other choice. I've made a bunch of different bench hooks to restrain my carving projects. Those can be made out of scraps left over from projects…and if you want backlog, I've piles of my own, TYVM. 8^(

If nothing more, C19 has emphasised the benefit of retail therapy...

I think I paid around $240 (Aust) for my first clamp (still Zyliss branded), however, I've just spent 30 hours going through my bank statements trying to figure out what I would have saved/done if I didn't buy it.

One day, all you skinflints will find an empty scrap bin, and you'll ******************** yourself when you will actually have to buy "non-scraps" for projects. You gonna abandon woodworking?

Love your kids, but don't spoil them with a large inheritance.

Woodworkers must put a $ value on their "workaround" time… cost that and you'll freak out at how big a spendthrift you really are.

I'm a skinflint due to an impoverished childhood, but I'll pay money for decent goods. I have 4/4 mahogany and 4/4 sapele planks that I got on the "cheap" awhile back at WoodCraft, of all places. No picking in the scrap bin, really. I bought a 1/2" thick plank of red oak a couple of weeks ago to house my ever-growing collection of palm carving tools. I have one drawer to finish, then I'll publish the final product. I went to eBay and spotted a Zyliss Profi-King and bought it, yesterday. I'll have it in a few days. My wife thinks that the sons will get to inherit all the money. She is wrong, but we have to be careful to have enough to last. I'm expecting to live another 15 years or so, and don't want the money to run out. I retired at age 62 in 2014, and my entire 401(k) and company retirement egg was invested at that time. Next year we'll start with the mandatory payouts. She's going to cry the blues about that, too!

I also had an frugal childhood being unfortunate to select the wrong poor, migrant parents after the 1956 Hungarian revolution… Swore I'll never begrudge spending, if I can "afford" it.

That's why I say to the family and friends about not wanting presents… If I want it, I'll already have it and if I don't have it, I don't want it. That's why I treasure some of the reviews here at LJ, as I find things I could probably need/want but don't have.

Though my favourite quote in shops when asked if they can help me…"No thanks, just looking for something I don't need but can afford."

Just bought one, complete, NiB for $90. It was all there, except that one jaw liner got broken in shipping. The original purchase receipt was in the box! $165 new, and it doesn't even appear to be used. Crazy. I put it in a drawer in one of my (metal) tool chests until I can configure my carving bench to accommodate it.

... I put it in a drawer in one of my (metal) tool chests until I can configure my carving bench to accommodate it.

That's where they're so good… no need to configure…. just attach, use and detach (if you like).

The only thing I can emphasise is to mount it at the end of a bench so that the crank hangs over the side… can be put in the middle but you'll need incremental turns, though the quick move simplifies it.

Hope the liner for holding tubes (etc) wasn't the broken one… that is a handy set of jaws.
