Tool Cabinet Concept

My first attempt at using Sketch up program for designing a piece. I am a bit slow on my first day but I think it will be a handy skill to add to my woodworking.

This is still a rough draft. I have to confirm that my tools will fit. The cabinet must fit between two ceiling beams. I may leave the hinged doors as open frames with tools hanging on both sides. The cabinets behind the doors will be mounted to the wall independently and remain open without doors of their own.

Getting better at Sketchup. Experimenting with some door paneling arrangements. It is handy to be able to rotate the doors and panels to check how they clear each other. The tools were available from the online library. I am almost ready to tackle drawing the dovetail joints in 3d.

These early concept drawings will be interesting to compare to what I end up building.

Here is where the new cabinet will go. I tried to line up the Sketchup model with the ceiling beams in the photo. Old kitchen cabinet will go. Table top lathe will move. I thought there was a bench under here somewhere.

This is day four of learning Sketchup. I got the importance of using groups and components. The program lets me swing the doors open and closed. The doors hit the beams so I reduced the cabinet width so they clear. Would have been a bummer to dovetail all that together and have it not fit the space. Maybe the computer can make me a better woodworker after all.

I populated the cabinet with tool models from the web to help me with planning and ideas. I found out how to put all the tool models on their own layer so I can turn them on and off. A handy feature for visualization.

My first virtual dovetails! They are cut very accurately too, within one pixel. The flipper doors could be just plywood but I thought it would be fun to put them in a frame. Experimenting with Sketchup texture on the surfaces. I use a trackpad on my computer normally. Turns out this is a difficult way to draw with Sketchup. A 3D navigator will arrive soon so I can draw with both hands. That will be different.

I am hoping that by blogging about this cabinet I might actually build it. My tool collection has become a disorganized mess. I am looking forward to having my layout tools out of the drawers and at the ready.

Having the 3D controller in my left had and the trackpad in my right has been a game changer. I can now fly through my plans. Thought I would start cutting lumber today but I keep coming up with ideas on my drawings in Sketchup. As the program gets easier for me I am exploring construction and configuration possibilities. The back panels and flipper doors have become bead board. Added crown molding just to learn the "follow me" tool in Sketchup. I did not want the saw till behind the main cabinet door when it is open so I added another cabinet or two to the sides. I can put less used tools like egg beater drills and such in those cabinets behind the open doors. As I account for all the tools that will move in here and their sizes the cabinet keeps getting bigger and deeper. The whole thing has dropped down and the work bench moved to one side. I no longer call this a cabinet. It has become the tool wall.

Not all work so far has been on the computer though. Clearing the area in anticipation I found things in that pile I have not seen in years.

The block plane gallery has become a fun little moment. I was trying to avoid having a shelf in front of the plane totes so I cut an eclipse out to avoid clutter. I know how I am.

Looks good. I'm glad people understand sketchup. I tried a few times and got so mad I had to lay on the floor and count to 10

I added joinery and contoured surfaces to the drawing. I had no idea that Sketchup could be such a useful design tool for me. After only one week of this program and I am intersecting solids and twisting planes. It was worth the late nights pouring over workbooks and tutorials to get this program in my toolbox. The 3d controller was a little crazy to get used to but it has made this program usable for me.

By exploding the parts I can think about how I will do the joints. I plan on doing all the groves with hand planes. I can print out on paper and attach to my wood for cutting out the shapes.

I never thought a computer program could ever augment my pencil and paper creativity this much.

If you are right handed you continue to use your mouse, trackpad, track ball or whatever you normally like to use in your right hand. In your left hand is the 3D controller that you use for moving your model in 3D space. The controller does not replace the normal mouse. 3 days ago I got an older model called "space navigator." It opened up a whole new world for me. I got the cheap one that works great.

Sweet!!! Your cabinet looks much more ambitious. Thanks for the tip on the 3D Controller!

I really like the lower plane gallery. Totally cool! I may abandon my first shot and create something like yours. What's you cabinet depth? I also really like the swing out chisel racks - that's and idea I'm definitely going to use.

I'm curious, are you using the free version of SketchUp or the Professional?

Shavings not more pixels

Building Facade Font Urban design Triangle

Learning to cut dovetails on the computer was fun but not satisfying enough. I could go on generating and refining plans on the computer but the time has come to stop making pixels and start making shavings.

Carpenter Tradesman Wood Flooring Floor

I almost forgot how quickly the Stanley #40 can take a cup out of a board.

The center cabinet is 18 inches deep. To put two boards together the Norm Abrams in me said to just grab the biscuit joiner and be done with it but the Roy Underhill in me said do it with a hatchet and drawknife. My tool collection was calling me so I whipped out the Stanley and quietly made shavings into the night.

What do you call a two handled plane that makes three shavings?
Stanley #148. This is the wide one. T&G overkill yes but the glue up could not have been easier.

I will need a pile of these!
California Alder I had cut with a portable band saw mill. I have a lot of it. Good enough for a tool box.

Got it. Just watched a Youtube, and learned that it makes the T&G joint by flipping it around.

Dovetails chamfered and extended

This is a microscopic study in Sketchup of what it might look like if I extend and chamfer the dovetails on the cabinet. I made a lot of mistakes before getting it right. Glad it was only pixels not my lumber.

#6 and #8 Stanleys on the table. I "sprung" the joints with a few shavings from the #6 before using the T&G plane.
All the big slabs are glued up for the deepest cabinet. I have never attempted hand cut dovetails on a box this size 19". It may be the last time you hear from me.
