I'm looking to install a piece of painted/finished wooden inlay into a piece of wood.
(To be specific a painted leaf shaped piece of inlay into the center of a board)

Any tips out there on preventing (or mitigating) the glue squeeze out and sanding duties/clean up that comes with gluing in finished wooden inlay? (in hopes of the finish holding up)

...any tips are Much Appreciated

Use hide glue, hot or liquid and the cleanup is just water. There should be no problem with subsequent finishes on the substrate wood.
