Thickness Planer Blade Install/Tuning Help

Hello everyone,

I have been using my craftsman thickness planer, that my dad passed on to me and I wanted to see if I could get a little advise on blade adjustments. Keep in mind that this is an older 12" thickness planer and the blades are no longer available from Sears parts direct. With that being said, I was able to find a couple of aftermarket companies that make suitable replacements. I noticed that last time I replaced the blades, one side seems to be a little higher than the other and I figured it was the blades. However, the blades look like that are in place equally. When I placed them in the blade slot, I aligned them both with the backside of the leading edge. Is there any type of fine tuning after blades are replaced or should they be aligned based on this method. Thanks.

You need to buy or make a knife setting jig to assure that not only are your blades all the same height, but level across the width of the planer head. Newer benchtop planers have self-indexing blades that eliminate the need for these jigs.
