Interesting quiz my dad sent me. you need to answer 4 questions correctly to pass. Honestly, I didn't pass, but was very close :( I can post the answers after some people get a chance to answer and test their knowledge. NO CHEATING! This is just for fun, you don't need to google the answers to try and show how smart you are. I'll know if you cheated lol.

New High School Exam, you only need 4 correct to pass.

1) How long did the Hundred Years' War last?

2) Which country makes Panama hats?

3) From which animal do we get cat gut?

4) In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution?

5) What is a camel's hair brush made of?

6) The Canary Islands in the Pacific are named after what animal?

7) What was King George VI's first name?

8) What color is a purple finch?

9) Where are Chinese gooseberries from?

10) What is the color of the black box in a commercial airplane?

Remember, you need 4 correct answers to pass.

Good luck.

No Googling required:

Canary islands are not in the Pacific, they are in the Atlantic. They were not named for the birds but the Spanish name was Canines (I'm not spelling that right), which is DOG.

Camel's hair brushes are not made from the hair of the camel. They are ox tail hair or sable, and likely even synthetic today. I believe the "camel" part came from either a manufacturer's name or person's name.

Catgut (one word, not "cat gut") is not from cats. Sheep and other commercially raised animal intestine.

Also, the black box in an airplane is not black. Color varies but often some kind of garish orange or yellow is involved to make it easier to find. That and a radio "pinger" to help with locating it.

Rwyoung, close, the islands come from Latin for dog Insula Canaria, Island of Dogs. However you are correct that they are located in the Atlantic not the Pacific…I just copied the email.

A few of you got four correct, congrats. Interpim, sorry you only got 2.

Here are the answers and some background info for them from the web. I only got 3 correct :(

1) How long did the Hundred Years War last?
The 100 Years' War was actually a series of conflicts between France and England that began in 1337 and ended in 1453 (116 years).

2) Which country makes Panama hats?
Ecuador
Panama hats are made exclusively in Ecuador and are woven by hand from a plant called the Toquilla.
The Panama hat has been worn for centuries with its origins being traced back as far as the 16th Century when the Incas were the first to use the Toquilla plant to produce hats. The hat in fact only became known as the Panama when over a century ago the workers involved in the construction of the Panama Canal used the elegant fibre hats as protection against the burning sun.

3) From which animal do we get cat gut?
Sheep and Horses
Cat gut is the name applied to cord of great toughness and tenacity prepared from the intestines of the sheep or goat, or occasionally from those of the hog, horse, mule, pig, and donkey. Those of the cat are not employed, and therefore it is supposed that the word is properly kitgut ("violin string"), kit meaning "fiddle," and that the present form has arisen through confusion that kit = cat. Another explanation of the origin of the cat in catgut is that it is an abbreviation for cattle which originally denoted not only cows, but all types of livestock.

4) In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution?
November
On November 7, 1917, Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin led his leftist revolutionaries in a nearly bloodless uprising against the ineffective Kerensky Provisional Government. As Russia was still using the Julian Calendar at the time, period references show an October 25 date, and it's still called the October Revolution.

5) What is a camel's hair brush made of? Squirrel fur
This is the trade name for brushes made of squirrel, goat, pony, bear, sheep or a blend of the above. They range greatly in softness, quality and cost. Actual camel hair is too woolly for brushes.

6) The Canary Islands in the Atlantic are named after what animal?
Dogs
The islands' name is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning Island of the Dogs, a name applied originally only to the island of Gran Canaria. It is thought that the dense population of an endemic breed of large and fierce dogs, like the Presa Canario, was the characteristic that most struck the few ancient Romans who established contact with the islands by the sea.

7) What was King George VI's first name? Albert

8) What color is a purple finch? Crimson

9) Where are Chinese gooseberries from?
New Zealand
Chinese gooseberry" is another (and older) name for kiwi fruit. The history of the kiwifruit began in the Chang Kiang Valley of China. Called Yang Tao, it was considered a delicacy by the great Khans who relished the fruit's brilliant flavor and emerald-green color. Knowledge of the fruit expanded to other countries in the mid 1800s to 1900s. A collector for the Royal Horticultural Society of Britain send samples home in 1847, and another send seeds to England in 1900. Plants were first exported from China to the United States in 1904, and seeds were brought to New Zealand in 1906.

10) What is the color of the black box in a commercial airplane? Orange (of course)

Here's one…Imagine you are lost in the woods, half frozen from the cold nighttime blizzard…as you wander along, you stumble onto a cabin. You rush inside, and look around. In it, by the light of the moon coming in the window, you find a candle, a woodstove, a kerosene lamp, a fireplace, and a pack of cigarettes. You only have one match. Which one do you light first?

It's back to kindergarten for me.

No. On second thought, I don't need to know any of that to make sawdust.

BTW I only got two right. For some reason I knew who Albert was and I have removed and/or installed more than a few black boxes in my day.
