Gluing a mitered leg or post

In response to Dave in Texas's question on a mitered joint, I thought I'd show an easy way to make a hollow leg or post, without any splines.

This method works very well and is simple. Actually, it's so easy it seems impossible, but your results will be perfect. We use it on very high end work, with no problem as the joint is furniture quality along it's entire length.

This is a top secret trick, so don't tell anyone okay.

Thanks a lot, Lee, for sharing your top-secret tricks. But, aren't you worried that you will lose business, when all of us are as great a craftsman as you? (I only wish it were that simple…) ;^D

I really appreciate those here who share their "tricks" with us. It has really helped me a lot!

Hi guys;

Thanks for keeping a lid on this!

No I'm not worried Tom, I'm looking for a new career anyway! I'm going to become an astronaut once I get past my fear of height!

Thanks for the post, Lee. As always you are a wealth of information.

I have used this on small pieces or when I needed to clamp an oddly shaped piece but it simply never occurred to me to use it on something as large as this. Duct and painters tapes can be some of the most versatile tools we own.

Interesting. It is just like making a mitered box. Hmmm.. Do you use just one board and then "wrap it" around the leg or post?

Thanks guys;

John, it becomes the leg when using four pieces. This particular piece was a fluted pilaster on a fireplace mantle, which is why it only has three sides.

Good tip Lee.
I see you prefer the blue tape as well.
There are times I wish it was a bit more tacky.
I also use a bit of rubber surgical tubing when things get a bit difficult.

Cheers

Lee - Great tip. I've been using tape for clamping for a long time. A lot of people overlook it.

Bob - Lee - Try this masking tape. There are different green tapes but this is the one to get.
It's for "For Hard To Stick Surfaces" and you can leave it on for 3 days with no glue residue.

The best thing about it is that it stretches a little allowing you to stretch it over a gap and it will pull
it together. It's part number 3M 2060. Sticker than the blue, but just as easy to get off. You just have to get it started.

Hi Bob;

Yeah, I am definitely a fan of blue tape, as well as the Green, as Gary points out.
