Taking a bit of a break, right now

Just to let you know

Took a bad tumble a couple weeks ago…..seemed to have messed up my right knee quite a bit. Walking with a cane isn't going that great. Getting some rehab for the knee. Seems there be a tear in the back….and some blood clots floating around inside the knee. Until the clots are gone…and I can stop the Blood thinners, they won't do any surgery to fix the tear.

Since stairs and I are not getting along too well….and I am taking a few painkillers…shop time has been shut down…for now. About all I CAN do is sit here on the computer and harass all the other posters on this site….and go to rehab, and doctor's appointments. Even going to the store is a chore…unless one of the electric carts is handy.

On a couple other sites…I have been digging back in time…and posting a "rerun" of a project….Keeps me busy, keeps others entertained…..Not sure IF that sort of thing would work here? "Dungeon Woodshop Reruns"? Seemed to work for Norm Abram….hmmm.

So, IF you are looking around for my "next" project blog…it just might be a while…until I an allowed back in the shop.

Stay tuned…

Hang in there, Bandit. I hope you get better soon.

In the meantime, if you're looking to "harass all the other posters on this site," feel free to give me all you've got. I can take it, and it'll help you get strong again.

I do wish you the best. You're a good guy.

For the first time in the last 6 yrs….I was unable to go to the Tractor Fest down in West Liberty, OH… Held every Labor Day Weekend. There is also a LOT of vendors…think of it as an outdoor Flea Market…last year, I walked almost a mile…then went back the next day and walked another mile…been some years, that I'd have walk twice that amount…and, I wasn't there to look at about a 100 farm tractors, either.

There was a few Yard Sales in the area, as well….missed out on those, too…just too hard to walk around..

Getting awfully tired of just sitting around, though…...

Rehab today…getting a wee bit better….still sore. Trying to convince the surgeon to go inside the knee and FIX the tears…as I am feeling new ones going on…

Not just the knee…seems with the pain-killers, it might not be a good idea to be near sharp, pointy, and spinning objects…..

I still have to drive the Boss, whenever she needs to go shopping….

One small step back…resting the leg up at the moment….Walking around like Chester from Gunsmoke…

Sorry about the knee! Do you have some carving tools? They're hopefully sharp, but as long as you cut away from yourself, maybe that's an option.

I'm feeling guilty now. Nothing wrong with my knee but I can seem to find the time to get in the shop and work on the bench, or any of the other projects that need attention.

One of life's important lessons is to develop an alternate plan, perhaps one that requires giving up your primary plan. Retirement from one's lifetime career may be one such example. At age 89 I no longer do gymnastics, rock climbing, or hang gliding. I often think about what new activities I'll take up when I quit woodcarving.

I"m sorry to hear of your difficulties, Bandit.

I remember a few years ago I woke up one morning and could not pick up my phone or buckle my belt. My left hand just wouldn't work. Went to the hospital so they could figure out if I had a stroke. Nope. But they gave me some anti-anxiety meds to deal with my chaustraphobia when I was being stuffed into an MRI machine - and that med really messed me up for several days - made me too dizzy to walk and wiped out my appitite.

They never really figure out my prlblem except maybe a pinched nerve in my neck.

But…. it just got better. Most likely your knee will too.

My friend tore up his knee wakeboarding at 58 and had surgery, did the rehab and in a year was back on the wake board - stronger than ever. His doctor said he was superman. I think that is because he did all the rehab religiously and was in generally good shape before hand. Do the exercises. Submit to the surgery and therapy (with good docs of course), and most likely it will be good in awhile.

But also, figure out how not to take a tumble. I can't say how to do that, of course.

Yep, finding out I don't "bounce" like I used to….a 68 year old bod y doesn't quite work the same as an 18 year old one…..

May at least try the stair steps to the shop, tomorrow…...may see how it fits in with the stuff I'm doing with the rehab items…..will rattle the Bone Doctor's cage Monday, and see when he intends to fix this knee. Hope he isn't another one of those that iF you don't NEED a new knee, he can't/won't help…..and..I doubt IF a cortisone shot will fix tears inside a knee…

So, I think I'll try the stairs…just to see how it will go….one step at a time….I am able to move around without the cane a bit better…

Stairs are…"fun" bad leg goes down first, then the good one….per stair step..takes a while….going back up…good leg THEN the bad one, for each step…...plan ahead, so you do not have to "run" upstairs ( like to the bathroom..)

have been down to the shop twice, so far…no real issues with the steps….have tried to use a handsaw both times….until the knee starts to complain. handsaw?

Just ONE trip today…finished up the resaw. And hung the saws back up…

Bone Doc. called this morning…basically waiting on the Blood clots to leave…find that out next week….and the DVTs need to stop…then he MIGHT go in and repair the tears going on…maybe…Have rehab on the knee tomorrow…

Going up or down stairs: Going down…bad leg first, then the good one, one step at a time. Going up? Good leg does all the "work" while the bad one just follows along. Yes, you WILL need to use them hand rails..both directions…..

ice pack is about ready….time to chill out for the evening….
