I just bought a used contractor Delta 2000 series (36-454) table saw from my neighbor who's downsizing his living situation. Last night, I aligned the blade to the miter slot (within 0.0005 of an inch from tip to toe), but noticed when I lowered the blade it was no longer in the same alignment. When lowered about half way from full, the blade shifted about a hundredth of an inch out of alignment. And when I raised it back to the top, it was aligned back like it was at 0.0005 of an inch.

This is the first table saw I've owned that I can actually align the blade to the miter slot. I've googled around and I have sort of an idea what might be the problem, but I'm actually confused on the specifics (rods, various mountings, something needing to be coplaner, etc).

If you have an idea as to what might be wrong, assume I know squat and please explain it to me that way :D

You are expecting tolerances that the table saw can't give. In fact, I doubt ANY table saw could meet those tolerances. You are not doing precision machining. You are working with WOOD! Get realistic in your expectations. Even if your machine could hold those tolerances you couldn't work to them or anywhere close. Get real!

You are expecting tolerances that the table saw can t give. In fact, I doubt ANY table saw could meet those tolerances. You are not doing precision machining. You are working with WOOD! Get realistic in your expectations. Even if your machine could hold those tolerances you couldn t work to them or anywhere close. Get real!

Thanks for the reply Planeman40! I agree with you that this isn't machining. I was happy to get the blade parallel to the miter slot within 0.005 of an inch. It was more an accident that I got it nearly exactly (i.e. half of a thousandth). Do you think that the blade going 0.01 out of alignment when moving it up and down is with acceptable tolerance?

I got my new SawStop and the alignment for the blade was out 0.0075" with the miter slot (I may have moved the top during transport to the basement). I aligned it this past weekend with the Woodpecker SG-WP tool and got it to about 0.0015". I didn't even think about lowering the blade and seeing if the blade was still aligned, thank you for floating this question. I'll take a look and see if that is an issue on mine. Sorry I can't help you on your saw make/type.

Sounds Like your blade is not at 90 Degrees. If alignment changes with blade height use a square to adjust blade to 90 degrees. Don't count on blade indicator pointer. Also check the blade for wobble.

Thanks for the reply DRSWoody! I'm pretty confident that my blade is at 90 degrees (I did some crosscutting with the TS and check the cuts for square, which they were), but I'll check again when I get home from work. If it IS at 90 degrees, any ideas what might be the cause?

0.01 is ten thousandths of an inch. That is the thickness of a piece of writing paper. I think it would be acceptable. Most people can't work that close on a table saw. But like DRSwoody says, use a square to check your blade after moving it. The only way to determine if this is a real problem for you is to begin using your saw and checking your cut wood with a square. Keep in mind that the wood can shift slightly on the miter gauge while cutting if you are not careful so don't let that enter into your dissatisfaction of tolerance. Glue a piece of sandpaper to the front to the miter gauge if necessary.
