Steel City Dust Collector Conversion

I installed a Wynn Environmental 35A Series Cartridge Kit my Steel City Model 65200 dust collector. It wasn't too difficult.

With this kit the cartridge is usually held in place by turnbuckles that attach between the (inside) opening in the separator cone and (inside) opening of the cartridge flange. Unfortunately, with this DC the turnbuckles would need to be shorter than the rather small turnbuckles supplied in the kit - less than 3". I had some 1/2" aluminum channel recovered from a long-discarded project that I used with 1/4" x 3" bolts to make some clips:

Using these instead of the turnbuckles, the installation was easy. Here is a shot looking up through the separator ring:

With the original filter bag in place it was not critical that the outer edge of the separator ring sealed completely against the outer ring. But with the cartridge filter, any leak there would blow dust into the shop. So just to be sure I caulked that seam with silicone.

Here is the final installation. You can see the white silicone I used to seal a small leak I had prevously at the inlet to the separator ring assembly.

Good conversion! My HF DC has some of the same sorts of leaks, and I am addressing them in very much the same way, except I am using clear silicone sealant, it stands out far less than white, and I have it already…

The caulk I used was carefully selected from whatever open tube that was left over from a home maintenance task.

If I had to do it all over again I would get that 2HP HF DC on sale and add this filter. No gripes about this Steel City unit, but I don't see much advantage over the significantly cheaper HF unit.

Yep, I need to add that Wynn on my HF 2hp one o these days. Hopefully sometime this year.
