Stanley Sweetheart #62 - how does the depth adjustment screw work?

I have one of the new Stanley Sweetheart #62s. Does anyone know does the depth adjustment screw (DAS) is supposed to work? The instructions say loosen the lever screw cap, then us the DAS to extend the blade by turning clockwise, retract by turning counter clockwise.

I find that the only way that I can turn the DAS is to first remove both the lever screw cap AND the iron, lifting it out of the frog/base, guessing where I want it to be, then reassembling everything.

Obviously non-ideal.

I don't have a Stanley #62, but I've heard about a lot of quality issues. Call them. They usually send a new on.
