The pantry in our bush house needed some remodeling. The "staircase" inside was really more of a ladder. My wife uses it everyday to go to the loft and hang laundry to dry and has had some close calls when trying to come down. So we did a remodel and built a more legitimate staircase, which also meant moving all of my solar equipment. All the lumber used was from trees I cut down and slabbed. Hopefully this staircase will prove to be more safe (at least after I make a handrail.)

Your stairway reminds me of the one in the home where I grew up (in which my parents still live). At my old age, I have trouble navigating the steep stairs but my father (97) still occasionally goes up to get something they have stored upstairs and even manages to get it down from there. (Most things got up there by taking a window out.) Their stairway is closed in on both sides (no handrail) and is probably less than 28" wide. The risers are closed in too.
When space is limited, we do what we must to make it work. I realize at your young ages, you can probably take those stairs pretty easily, but do be careful and get that handrail up soon!
