I've not had this problem before. What type of stain are you using? Did you let the stain dry completely before you sealed it? I sometimes have trouble if I don't, but am not sure about this problem. I guess it could be the humidity--I wouln't know. I live in Lubbock where we don't get much rain. I doubt that retarder would help. I've never heard of using it for stain.I often use it for lacquer though. (It does rain occasionally)
Staining Red Oak in Texas

Was hoping someone could suggest a fix for this? I have built a mission style headboard for a customer and am in the finishing process. The stain is pushing out of the pours in little droplets.
I have stained furniture with red oak before and have not had this much problem. Here is what I have done so far.
- Environmentals: I am finishing early in the morning (7:00 am) when the temprature is between 85 & 90 degrees but the humidity is around 70-80%. The temps have been over 100 for the past few weeks and I need to deliver this ASAP so I can not wait for October for the Dallas weather to change.
I have applied:
- 2 coats of wash (25% sanding sealer/75% laquer thinner) light sand between coats
- two coats of stain sanding between coats
I am spraying the finish with an HVLP gun. The stain can not sit long or it is like trying to wipe off glue.
I suspect the temprature and humidty may be the issue. Do I need a blush retarder in the stain?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
