I've seen a lot of videos where I see people sanding and it looks like their sander follows contours much better than mine (I have the 390k). I think this is due to their pad being softer than the stock pad. I know that with some sanders you can buy pads with different hardness, but I emailed Porter Cable and they say that they only sell the "medium" hardness (the one that it comes with). However, they say "As long as the specifications of the pad are met, different pads can be used". I'm assuming the mean that the mounting holes line up, etc.? Does anyone know of a soft pad that would fit on this sander?

Thanks,

David

Not sure about soft pads, but you can find about any replacements or parts at different businesses that sell parts for tools…..I buy mine at two places: Tool Parts Direct.com or Replacement Parts.com. Both carry all major brand tools and excessories….Contact Tool Parts Direct at 1-888-358-0332….Don't remember the other number…Just Google them to find out more details…..At TPD you can find schematics for your specific tool, and it gives the replacement #s and cost…..

Hi Rick,

I just called eReplacementParts and they also said they only have the PC390k "normal" pad (at least the story is consistent between them and Porter Cable!). I guess my original question here was to see if anyone knew if another brand (Bosch, etc.) had a pad that would work/fit with this sander?

Ah, interesting. An interface pad makes plenty of sense (and actually sounds much easier than actually replacing the sander/base every time).

Mario, did you mean "make sure you get the platen protector"? I actually don't understand why the interface pad would wear the hooks on the stock sander base any more than loop sandpaper would? I guess I don't get what the protector is actually if not just another layer of hook/loop?

David, yes the platen protector, sorry about that, what it does is limits the wear on your sander base hooks. You do add another layer of hook/loop to your base but the heavy wear goes to the protector rather than the base, a lot cheaper to replace anyway, in my experience this wear seems to be more pronounced with Abranet than Norton 3X for example.

I have thick soft pads for both my PC 330 and 7335. Don't know if PC offered this with the 390, but since they've been bought by Black and Decker everything seems to have taken a substantial deviation away from quality.
