Hi fellow Lumberjocks and Lumberjills. I was pondering the Gorilla Glue contest that just ended. The winners were picked randomly (as much as anything can be random that is). The Gorilla contest was nothing new but the glue. This may be limiting to some people who don't have all the leftovers that some people have or don't have any glue.

I thought, how about a contest that doesn't have anything but randomness involved? The winners will be picked randomly. The projects can be any random project you've ever done or will do. And the prizes will be random also. I'm willing to donate some wood from my cut-off bin. If enough people are interested, maybe Martin will endorse the idea and announce it to the whole community.

Reply here if you are willing to participate. Participate can mean post a project, donate a prize, or speak favorably of the idea. ;-)

i like the themed contests best. martin usually comes up with some quirk for the contest that make it interesting. this makes you think outside of what you would normally build. i think the fun is in the creative challenge and seeing what the other people come up with. check out the 2×4 contest to see what i mean. a completely random contest like you're describing sounds more like a door prize for projects that would be posted anyway.

It sounds like you want to make sure nobody gets excluded due to lack of resources etc. I'm ALL for that. If they don't have any glue, then they're just gonna have to fork out a little. IMO, ANYONE can afford a little glue.

I'm not much for totally random winners. I would like to see multiple winners, say the top 5. I too like the themed contests. I seem to recall a contest for building something out of an 8' 2×4. That intrigues me. Or maybe only use 10 paint stirring sticks, or 10 wooden rulers? Or how about building something using 50 wooden pencils?

Just my 2c worth.

Ok, yes, I was concerned about all the people that may not post because something about the contest excludes their work. Yes, even the people who can't afford glue (sorry rance, we're out here). But, apparantly nobody's interested.

Something to think about:
1) Lumberjocks has almost 19,000 members
2) Lumberjocks has almost 32,000 projects posted
3) The last LJ contest had about 151 entries
4) .8% of the members participated
5) The last contest had a total of 252 voters
6) 1.3% of the members voted
7) If just 5% of the members entered projects in a contest, that would be over 900 projects
8) If just 10% of the members voted on a winner, that would be nearly 19,000 votes

We should all be thinking about how to increase participation. Randomness is my first idea. What's yours?

Jim,

I believe the BIGGEST deterrant is embarassment, MINE! :) Even as complimentary as folks on LJ are, there's the issue of "I know I won't even get close to winning, so why bother". Offer something to level the playing field. Something that ANYONE can do, and do well. Have it NOT be dependant on what tools you have, but by sheer genius (almost)alone. The 2×4 contest brings us closer to that(no expensive wood required) as well as does the 'randomness' aspect. Maybe random is the key.

As for people who can't afford glue, ever tried flour & water? Or use dowels or other jointery. :) I think you could get some glue if you really tried harder. Recycle some soda cans at the recycle center for $$$. Or just ASK someone local, to help you out. Freecycle.org is one place to ask.

You can't win if you're not in the game as they say rance. Don't worry, I have plenty of glue but, I bet there's at least one of our members who is out and can't afford glue before the contest is over. I think LJs has even had a contest like that - no fasteners including glue. The two by four was a good idea but wouldn't address the concerns of most of the members about having a chance to win. Did you see the winners of that contest? I don't think people can read the statistics above and conclude that skill is the determinant in most of the contests here. It turns out that it's a matter of popularity, not skill. To be based on skill, you have to know how to do the stuff you're judging. Just like judging iceskating. I can't do that except gut feel for what I like. Not only is skill not the determinant, but it's not even a large group of people that determine popularity. Tiny as a matter of fact.

Thanks for the comments,
