Hey everyone. I've been a member for a little while and really enjoy reading everyone's posts and trying to absorb as much wisdom as i can. I'm getting ready to start on my final Christmas project but I'm struggling with my design some. I'm going to build a tv stand for my wife's grandmother. This will be a small stand with a single shelf and drawer. The question i have is on the measurements. I want this stand to be about 19 ins wide and 24in tall. I have one board that is 10 in wide. Would this look ok if i just made the stand 10 ins deep? I have a hard time visualizing it and i don't want it to strange if these proportions don't work together. Thanks for any help.

Stands can be quite narrow, but you need to consider the size and weight of the TV. I would be concerned about a stand that narrow tipping, especially if the TV is heavy raising the center of gravity. Regarding proportions, play with SketchUp or just graph paper to come up with dimensions that look pleasing to your eye. HTH

Since your still in the planning stage. May I suggest you consider adding a lazy Susan top. I've done a couple like that and have gotten great feed back. Folks seem to like to move from one spot to another and turn the TV towards them.

Just an idea.

Since you have ten inch boards and you were considering a width of 19 inches what about laminating two together. You can use a jointer to create a square and smooth edge or sometimes a good table saw can deliver the same result. If neither are available then a plane will work although they take patience and skill to use. Conversely you can use MDF for the top - it paints up nice and might be a good alternative.

Thanks for the ideas guys. That is why i like this forum everyone has such good ideas. 2Dusty2 i think i am going to make panels for the sides to make the stand deeper. I was wanting to have the sides made from just one board but i don't think 10in is deep enough.
