Start of a plan, and a mess

Things are getting messy, dis-organized, and just needs something better,,,

This entire area needs a "facelift" from the left side's messy pile..

All the way to the right..

Lines show the limits I can go to. IF a door would swing open on a new cabinet…it has to clear the plane til.

This side, nears to clear the drill press handles….

I can go until the ceiling joists, about 48" above the benchtop. And 36" in width….maybe. Depth?

IF I clean off the "back porch", I'd have up to 4' deep….way too much for my arms…
I could slide the drill press to the left a bit…IF need be..

4" at the most..meh.

Plan is, the next time Menard's has a sale on 1×12 x 4' planks, I'm buying a stack of the best on the pallet….4 planks for the top, bottom and 2 sides. The rest will be for shelves, and any drawers. Doors will get a 2-4" deep frame around a panel. Panel will be used to hang a few tools on. Back of the cabinet will be T&G planks, so I can hang racks, hooks, shelves and such….May just buy a plank of Car Siding? Or, just make my own.

Some of the tools will get sorted through….keeping the better for use, rest over in a drawer…

Need to sort through this drawer. Other piles need cleaned up..

Maybe find a better place for the cases? And NOT sitting with the laundry soap…

So..about the first week of April….I'll get the lumber….and then we'll see how this goes…..

First…I think I should pare things down a bit….to just what tools I would need in the new case….the rest could get stored away…in case one of the "keepers" breaks, or quits working….

Sorting has begun, slowly....

Did a face plant Sunday….nose and right shoulder hit the floor…hard, I don't bounce, like I used to. Monday shop was closed, while I healed up a bit..

Today? Culled the herd a bit…

Went through all of the Yankee screwdrivers….The #133H ones went into a drawer. Checked out each one of the 135s, the 130s….if it had an issue, into the drawer….if no issues were found?....and these were the ones that are "perfect"....springs work, chucks work, ratcheting prawls aren't broke, shaft wasn't bent…..One #135…and 3 #130s….one of each size tip…there is just one #131A..

Works great, tips is in great shape…save this for the BIG jobs.
Push Drills….set aside the Millers Falls ones, as their bits are rare (for me) and do not fit the North Brothers made chucks…Have plenty of bits (16!...) for the Yankees 41s, so..

One on the left, is an older model, chuck sleeve unscrews to change the bits. the other 2 are newer, where the collar has to slide back to release the ball keeper. Bits fit both styles…set these up with a different size bit…saves changing bits during a job ( have to learn HOW to sharpen the blasted things..)

Which brings up..

Which brace to keep….thinking both of the 6" sweeps…an 8" and a 10"....the 12" Samson and the 14" Stanley will be for them BIG jobs…which leaves….which chuck to keep in the 8-10" sweep size…

Holdalls? Barbers? Improved Barbers….i think that one chuck is a Leland?
There is a Goodell Pratt Co. breast drill and a G-P Chain drill stashed away…save them for the BIGGER Jobs.
Eggbeaters have been sorted….M-F No. 2-01, and Craftsman ( #78?) and the smaller Mystery drill….might also keep the Stanley Defiance clone of the M-F No. 5…..

squares? Still trying to sort them out..

Keeping both of the small 6" squares…..not sure about the three 12" squares.

As for the wood handled squares…..we'll see….will stash the all-metal ones.

need to go out and buy some Lumber, before too much longer…

A solid, glued up back, for a start..

Went through the stack of ten 1×10 x 4' planks…trying to get 4 "pick of the litters" and haul them to the shop. Goal was to joint the edges, and glue up a panel for the back of the case…..nned to attach racks and things to hold tools in….a 1/4" thick plywood panel just wouldn't do….

Happen to stand one 4 footer straightup, in the location the new Tool "shed" will go…....something didn't look quite right….bench this will be sitting on is almost 3' tall…..add a 4' box onto that…..ceiling joists are at 7'2" above the floor of the shop….I don't think I'll be reach that far up, just to get a small chisel down….would be nice to use the top of the cabinet to store a few boxes on….

Hmmm, Design Change! instead of a 3/4" x 3' wide by 4' tall box….will now be a 3' wide by 38" tall box….which meant..I needed to trim 4 boards down a bit…

Shoulder is still sore from a "Nose Plant" a few days ago ( Landed on the glasses on my nose, AND the front corner of my shoulder? Besides, this is a "Vintage saw" I'll be using…

A 6" No. 520 SKIL saw….even says "Home Shop" on the label. One of the cut-offs hit the shop floor…not only did it split, but a large corner of the board broke off…..I went through each board…to get the best 36" stretch i could….and removed the bad ends….once all four were trimmed…time to use a Jointer..

Hey..it is a "Cordless" model….Stanley No. 7c…type 9, I think…

8 pounds of iron, brass, and wood….worked just fine….then the "fun" and cussing could begin….

All edges jointed. set up the first board into the leg vise, and added a clamp at the other end,,,had a second use for that clamp….it was also holding a caul….I set up the cauls, to keep the boards from falling off…as the beads of glue were mooshed around….was finally able to assemble the "small" panel…once I found clamps the right length..

The two 3/4" pipe clamps came in handy….there is a 1/2" Pony Pipe clamp down at the right end…with a pair of Visegrips on the pipe, to prevent any slippage….let this mess/mass sit a day or so…until the cure has cured…may add a tool holder/batten across the width…to KEEP things flat.

My son had a metal-working project to do…..and needed some of these cut to length..

Bandsaw will cut this stuff…just need to go slow, mainly to cut a straight line. There was also a sheet of steel, needing 4 holes drilled…center punch, small drill bit, bigger drill bit….disc sander to de-burr the holes…building a lift-out tray for a toolbox….to store magnetic figurines in. ( War Hammer)....then clean up my tools, and then do the woodworking…..

1 out of the clamps, 2 back in..

Almost like the "1 step forward, 2 steps back?"? Not quite…At least the back panel came out decently…

Hmmm, left a pile of c clamps on my bench…

Ok, put these away, for now…need the bench space. There was a problem with the two 1×4s I WAS going to use

Also needed a better 1×10….off to Lowes, and pick out a decent 1×4 x 6', and a 1×10 x 6' Then set layout work..

Top and bottom panels but into the side panels….need to find out how long to make the top and bottom panels to fit…Made a mark at each side, and measured between those two marks….then cut the parts to length…

Then this Millers Falls #15 and the Stanley #7c jointed a few edges, to where a dry fit looked good…

enough for the glue, clamps, and cauls…

Then set this one aside. and repeat for the other one….top and bottom panels are clamped up..

And set both aside, out of the way…

Then sort through the stack of 1×10 x 4' planks, and bring the best 2 to the shop….trim them for length of the side panels….Then just clamped them together, for now….to keep them from moving around to much…same with the 1×4 x 3' boards….

Until I can get back to the shop…later today (nothing else to do..)

A little assembly

Ok, last two glued up panels are out of the clamps..

These will be the top and bottom of the case. Decided to go ahead with the assembly. Needed a way to keep the back panel from falling over..

Had to spin the back around, as I'll be working from the "outside" of the case….a big, old c clamp did the trick…
Then figure out which panel to attach first…and how to do it….

First I drilled a bunch of pilot holes. The "fun" was holding the bottom plank in place, long enough to get that clamp in place….then install a bunch of 2" long screws….had one spot where the screw wanted to come up and out of the panel…..drill a new pilot hole a bit lower down…try again…

then, rotate this mess 180 degrees, and add the other panel ( top?)...same problems, same cussing…
Then rotate 90 degrees….

rather than wait on two more panels to be glued up…I did this in stages. Since the top and bottom panels have the 1×10 part of their panel screwed to the back panel ( clear as mud?) the 1×4 parts of the side panels go on first….bead of glue before it is installed…screws through more pilot holes….including in the back panel into the narrow board's edge….have use for those clamps, later…

Top and bottom panels were trying to bow in a bit….a C clamp and a block of wood to pull them straight…bead of glue between the 2 boards, and more screws….rotate and repeat..

Let this sit a bit…as I need to clean off a spot for this little box to go ( besides taking up shop floor space…)

The old drill til was removed. and all the stuff around it was set aside….then two "foot pads" were installed, after I swept the area clean…

Just a couple scraps, screwed down to the tabletop. set back a bit, to allow for the doors ( I still need to build)

OK…now the "fun part"....just me, and that box…lifting the box off the floor and onto the foot pads…

12-3/4" deep, on the inside….about 3' x 3' square….made me glad I didn't make this out of Oak, or Ash….

To get some clearance between it and the drill press….had to scoot the DP to the left a few inches…4" actually was about all I could get…

I also hung the chuck key by it's chain ( so the key won't run away…) making sure it did reach the chuck. That powerstrip had been just floating around ( and trying to "connect" up to the grinder's wheel) so a couple of screws to attach it out of the way.

Now comes the tasks for today….since I kept most of the cut-offs and scraps…

Need to make "hangers" for all of this mess…as I NEED my workbench back!....I salvaged the old drill till parts…the drill rack is getting re-used. Already checked….the Stanley 14" sweep brace will fit inside the case…room to spare. The rack will get installed first…and then I'll go from there….

Once the hangers are done, and some of the tools are put away…I can start on build a pair of doors….to hang even more stuff on…yes, I added a few more screws, through the case, through the pads, and into the tabletop below…3" long ones, along with the 2" ones the go between the case and the pads….i do NOT want this thing to tip over, when I open a door…

Load it up !

Ok…took a few days, and moved a few things around…

Used to be a red, plastic shelf with a few screwdrivers hanging there…and a couple boxes were moved….hmm.

How about a tour of the cabinet….still have two doors to build, but…

Red shelf is filling up…I salvaged the rack from the old drill til, as well..

Upper right hand corner…

Bottom right corner…thinking I could store a plane along the bottom edge…

Bottom left corner…there is the two missing boxes. Saws are waiting for a door to be hung on…

And the upper left hand corner….

Need to buy three 1×4 x 6' boards, STRAIGHT ones, to build two doors….4" thick, by 18" wide, by 36" tall,,,,so even more items will have a home…

That be the 5 cent tour, be sure to tip your driver on the way out…

Build a door

First, I need a glue up done…two 1×10s hauled to the shop. trimmed down from 4' to 36-1/8" long, then clamped up and the edges jointed.

Then glue the two together, into a panel…

needed a few cauls…

Should have seen the knots on the ends I cut off.. Let this mess sit a day…had to go out and buy some new 1×4s, anyway…last two were a bit too bowed up…So, took the clamps off..

2 of the 3 new 1×4 x 6' boards were hauled to the shop. Needed to cut one side at 36'strong..Mitersaw..

The cordless kind…

Had the clamps off, so I could get the right measurements for the longer stiles….had to dig around for one drill bit…the sharp one, that is…needed 3 drills set up, to make things go a bit quicker…a 3/8" forstner bit, and a pilot hole bit, and a phillips screwdriver bit…A clamp and a bead of glue, to start with..

Run a screw in, move the clamp a bit….repeat until this edge is done. Do the same routine for the other long edge (stile?)..measure for the rails…installing one wasn't that easy…already a press fit, and a pair of clamps to flatten the cupped 1×10s…just stand the door up on an edge….it was adding the screws across the bows..

That proved a bit rough to do…I could support the end I was working on…the other end was floating in mid-air. Found a scrap that spanned the width, and clamped it, and the door to the bench..then the other end was done…without the scrap needed…but I did need a LONG clamp…

Had a stubborn spot…had to pull things into alignment..until I could add the screws, then flip over( this thing is getting heavy) and do the other corner….then lay this mess down…complete the screws…and start on flattening the front of the door..

beltsander to level..had a few high spots that the #3 plane could work down to flat….ROS to finish up…flip this thing over onto it's face..

One 1×4 was slightly wider than the other. Stanley #8 was used to level them all down. and a square edge too.
Beltsander cleaned up the joints on the corners…and a wavy edge on the door front. Time for a test drive?

Set a pine scrap down first, to match the foot pads under the case. Then one clamp to hold the door shut.

I think that will do for one afternoon..so..

hang up the Shop Apron, and call it Quitting Time.

Right hand has been hurting, ever since that fall in the kitchen ( Face Plant, Landing Zone Nose)...was getting worse…decided to finally go get it checked out…Xrays negative, they think it might be a tendon or two…wearing a splint until Monday, and call the Family Doctor for a follow-up. No Shop Time until then

When I am next allowed in the shop….I need to build Door #2…and fix up a way to hang a couple of saws. Meantime, I'll research the type of hinges to use…not a big fan of Piano hinges, though..

rack for some chisels, door#2 started..

Taking things a bit slow, lately….taking it easy on the right hand….so

had a stash of extra chisels..

Along with a few everyday users….some of the "extras" can go back in the rack along the back of the tool well…about 7 needed a new home, though. Dug around in the scrap pile….wanting a couple strips. 2 that were a bit on the thicker side, and one thin one. One of the thicker strips was cut down to about the right length, to fit inside a door on the cabinet…second strip was a hair thinner…bandsaw to chop it into "bite-sized" pieces.

laid out the 7 chisels by size…started with a longer bite sized piece on each end…and worked towards the middle..

have enough leftovers, I could make a second one of these. Each piece was given a dab of glue, and mooshed around until it looked good….then the thin, outer strip was added, with a bit more glue..

And a few clamps. Always wondered what those spring clamps were good for, now I know..set this aside until Monday. Plan is to drill a couple pilot holes, counter sink them, and attach the rack to the inside of one of the doors…then add a strip below that, for the blades to rest on…so they don't rattle around, in there..

Then brought one 1×10 x 4' plank to the shop…with my left hand holding it. Set it on the bench. Measured out a 36" strong section…trying to see which end to cut off of the 48"...knots were in the middle, of course…

square a line across. problem now was how to cut this off….right hand is not up for the handsaw routine, tablesaw is buried at the moment…and the board is too big for either the bandsaw, or the mitre box….got out 2 speed squares….and a clamp, or two.

Ok, saw guide/speedsquare. I marked how far from the edge of that saw's blade out to the edge of the foot plate, squared that line across. double checked with the other speed square. Visegrips Finger clamp to lock the guide in place. With all this weight out on one end, a clamp was added to hold the plank to the bench top…Then, just push the saw along the guide….and make the cut. 6" Skil saw, doesn't weigh very much, and most of that is sitting on the plank.

Nice straight cut. set the squares aside, and the saw….checked the edges with a straightedge. marked the straightest edge..then this shows up..

Hmm, well..IF I leave this face as the "inside" of the panel…the "defect" will be hid..

All areas marked so I can keep track of them…set this plank aside…take a short break. Then haul the over plank to the shop, and set it on the bench….noticed a problem area..

It was causing a bow and a twist..

Kinked the board a bit. well, I can cut most of the off, cut line falls just short of the knots. there is a pitch pocket as well….worst of that towards the inside, which places the knots on top of the 1×4 frame….should keep the knots in line. checked to edge for straight….will be a slight "spring joint", no biggie..

First clamp goes in the middle, then work on each end, with clamps and cauls…this will be the outside/show face of the door….the inside?

Will look better, covered in tools. And that was it for today…bench is pretty well tied up right now….need to cut some 1×4s for the frame. Until then..

So, laid the 1×4 x 6' down on the mitre box…find the center…should leave 2 pieces at 36" long…in theory

I can't hold the saw in a "death grip"...makes sawing go better…also use the entire length…not just more teeth, it keeps the wear on just the middle section of the saw to a minimum . Then glue and clamp time..

I kept 3 drills set up, counting the one to drive the screws, one to drill a pilot hole, and..

A Vintage drill, with a 3/8" forstner bit to do 3/8" deep counter bores..saves resetting one drill between three bits.

About 6-7 screws should do…flip this over, and repeat for the other stile…

keeping things steady, while I'm working, was a bit of a challenge….then measured how long to make the top and bottom rails…16-7/8" long…came from a bowed 1×4 x 4'...the worst of the bow was in the middle….scrapped that spot. Then glue and clamps, pull things together and flat,,,do the corners first, leave the clamps in place..

Corners done…lay the door flat on the bench, 6 screws added. rotate, do the other end the same way…

laid a couple long scraps across the bench. Then start cleaning things up….plane, beltsander ROS….ends were done with the door standing on the floor..

One dry fit, to see which way looked best….then marked one end as the top…

"T" for Top. Which meant the while one stile could simply be planed flat..

The stile that will sit against the other door needed a bevel made….doesn't take much..

Maybe 5 degrees…beltsander COULD do this, but 36" of stile needed something a wee bit longer..

Stanley No.7c, Type 9…..then clean up with the sander.
Placed a scrap 1×4 over where this door will go, and got a clamp ready…time for the dry fit..

You can see the scrap it is sitting on, too…seemed to fit. next Payday I'll buy some piano hinges to install both doors…i even picked out the handle to use..

Ok, door is as done as I can get it, for now….the rack for the chisels needed cleaned up…

Planes worked nicely….ends were squared up on the mitre box…

Shallow counterbores and pilot holes were drilled..

A Stanley No. 60-1/2 was used to add a bevel to all the sharp edges..

Ends and all…set the rack into the vise, and checked how the chisels will set..

This is actually from the back of the rack. May use a counter-sink bit, and give each slot a bevel, for the chisels to sit a bit better…

Legs were getting a bit crampy…3 hours of shoptime….swept the floor, and closed up shop, for the day.

Stay tuned….may do a bit of work on some hangers for handsaws….until I can get the doors hinged.

Stanley No.7c, Type 9…..then clean up with the sander.
Placed a scrap 1×4 over where this door will go, and got a clamp ready…time for the dry fit..

You can see the scrap it is sitting on, too…seemed to fit. next Payday I'll buy some piano hinges to install both doors…i even picked out the handle to use..

Ok, door is as done as I can get it, for now….the rack for the chisels needed cleaned up…

Planes worked nicely….ends were squared up on the mitre box…

Shallow counterbores and pilot holes were drilled..

A Stanley No. 60-1/2 was used to add a bevel to all the sharp edges..

Ends and all…set the rack into the vise, and checked how the chisels will set..

This is actually from the back of the rack. May use a counter-sink bit, and give each slot a bevel, for the chisels to sit a bit better…

Legs were getting a bit crampy…3 hours of shoptime….swept the floor, and closed up shop, for the day.

Stay tuned….may do a bit of work on some hangers for handsaws….until I can get the doors hinged.

This tool Cabinet was designed in my head…the infamous Single Brain Cell Sketch Up.

Best system around? A sheet of paper, a ruler, and a pencil….and just start sketching out what you want.

Clamps came off, build-a-door #2, and other stuff

All clamps came off. 1×4s hauled to the shop…supplies laid out, even found a full box of 2" long, coarse thread screws….

So, laid the 1×4 x 6' down on the mitre box…find the center…should leave 2 pieces at 36" long…in theory

I can't hold the saw in a "death grip"...makes sawing go better…also use the entire length…not just more teeth, it keeps the wear on just the middle section of the saw to a minimum . Then glue and clamp time..

I kept 3 drills set up, counting the one to drive the screws, one to drill a pilot hole, and..

A Vintage drill, with a 3/8" forstner bit to do 3/8" deep counter bores..saves resetting one drill between three bits.

About 6-7 screws should do…flip this over, and repeat for the other stile…

keeping things steady, while I'm working, was a bit of a challenge….then measured how long to make the top and bottom rails…16-7/8" long…came from a bowed 1×4 x 4'...the worst of the bow was in the middle….scrapped that spot. Then glue and clamps, pull things together and flat,,,do the corners first, leave the clamps in place..

Corners done…lay the door flat on the bench, 6 screws added. rotate, do the other end the same way…

laid a couple long scraps across the bench. Then start cleaning things up….plane, beltsander ROS….ends were done with the door standing on the floor..

One dry fit, to see which way looked best….then marked one end as the top…

We have hinges!

Got to the point I just had to get out of the house..can only stay cooped up so long. So, mail a box out, then head to Lowes for a bit…even had the van's window down a bit….enjoyed the fresh air, as it were….

Anyway, bought 2 hinges. 30" long. With TINY screws…We have ways…

Had some 1" screws I could add in, about every 4th screw. Had the driver for the screws, another with a VIX bit…

Needed a way to set the doors open, while I attach the hinges to the case. Ataaching them to the doors was easy, just lay the door on the bench…but…I needed a way to keep the door even with the top of the case…so

A 1×4 scrap was screwed down to the tabletop. !x4 is the same thickness as the foot pads under the case. Left side was the easy one…the right side?

For one thing, there is no tabletop here. A 1×10 was screwed to the case.. and a clamp added to keep it there..

Installed the right hand door first…instead of the tiny screws, or the 1" screws…about every third one was a 2" long coarse thread screw…to better hold up to the door's weight hanging off of the case..

had to move a couple planes out of the til, so I'd have a better angle to install the screws..

Right side installed…now for the left. It needed a bevel along the non-hinged stile….set the door onto the shelf under the bench, added a clamp to keep it there..one at the "far end"

Another clamp to hold the near end..

Because that handplane was going to do the bevel..

I leaned the lateral all the way over, to try to get the bevel set. LOTS of shavings…still needed the beltsander to fine tune things…then added the hinge, and then installed the door to the case…

While the left door was standing open..added the chisel rack..

Including that pine strip for the blades to rest against….while drilling a few pilot holes, drill bit skipped out, and tried to drill my left thumb! Was promptly placed in the nearest trash can…..since it had also bent.
Bandsaw to cobble a blade keeper for a handsaw….then install the hanger for the saw..

A little fresh DNA on the hanger. Then the fun began…trying to get both doors to shut….sander to adjust the bevels on both doors…

Handles were installed, and a Hook & Eye latch ( for now, until I find one I like better)

Will keep adjusting the fit of the doors. Need to mill a few dozen plugs of Pine. Finish? Hmmm

Let things age naturally? Add a Stain? Prime & Paint?
Stay tuned, need to fill the doors up will tools, too…( might have enough?)

Made some thing similar in Mar 2011, and its about the same size, I had all the same problems with alignment as well

I will have to see if I can find a picture for you.

Hey I went out myself today on the way back I found a disused lawn mower dumped on the footpath

Brought it home and spent about half an hour on it and got it running.

I managed set off the smoke alarms in the garage when it first fired up but it ran OK after all the smoke had cleared and did a test mow with it.

Result: Its a keeper my kids are going to kill me when they find out! Mower no 3 junking up the place!

Update on that plug cutter, needed sharpened…and a skinny board for the vise on the drill press. was having trouble cutting the plugs..

Once they were made, a small screwdriver could pop them out, dab of glue on the narrow end, and tap into place..

let the glue set a bit. Chisel and a tap with the hammer to trim the plugs down…block plane to smooth things out.
Sharpened the cutter, today..

And made the last 11 plugs. made a road trip to Lowes, and picked up the latches..

used a tool by Irwin, to start the screw holes..

hard part was setting the latches so they closed the doors up tight..

Then installed the last of the plugs, trimmed them flush, and sanded them smooth..

IF you watch how the grain runs, plugs will almost disappear…almost…Then gave the door#2 a brushed on coat of Witch's Brew..

Added a strip to the bottom edge of #2

And a couple more keepers for the braces..

getting a bit crowded? Chisel rack also got a finish…to protect the steel from the Oak in the rack..

So…I think this is about ready to "open for business"?

just be sure to close the doors, when done..

Might be ready to post as a "Project"?

Insides are still a work in progress, trying to find the best way to stash things…without a crowd…

Piling up in the corners…

I see a triangular file and a subject plug cutter but no competency skills that you used to get it serviceable again.

BTW I checked my Leonard Lee The complete guide to Sharpening but he used a triangular stone of which I do not have.
