My neighbor is moving soon. He's offloading what he can't take with him. He sold me 60 Board Feet of rift sawn white oak for $50. One plank is 22" wide and 8' long, one is 16" by 10', the rest are all 10" wide. I mentioned that I was looking to find hardware so I could build a Gerstner toolbox clone. He had one that needs some repair, and he gave it to me! Now all I need to do is fix this one up a little. I won't go into the other deals, somebody will reach through the phone like Ghost Dad and choke me. Now I have so much wood I'll have to walk through my garage on only one side until I get it stored in the rafters.

Sorry about the safety hazard that wood is causing, I am sure if you post your address and leave the shop door
open someone will eliminate that hazard at no charge. Some one has to say it, "YOU SUCK'. In the interest of
veracity and truth in posting, I am sure that you should be required to post before and after pictures of that
Gerstner box. Hope you have an ilnterestilng New Year.

Thanks, Gus. I just opened it up and discovered that I'll have to replace one bottom drawer side, as it is completely missing. Straightened out one bent latch. The felt is peeling and the top veneer, etc. But I sure ain't complaining! I'm starting a woodcarving class this coming January (as a student) and will use this for the tools. It has a nasty patina that I want to clean off before my wife sees it. She'll want me to leave it that way, but it is sticky from labels on the faces of the drawers. Good idea on pictures.

Funny stuff going on. The two top left drawers are black walnut faced (not obvious in pics 1 and 2), the rest are QSWO. Anyone up for a trade on a couple of drawers? 10-13/16"W X 8" D X 1" Tall and 1-1/2" Tall. My wife says "It is a special box!". lol

Not being an expert on Gerstner, I noticed that the two walnut faced drawers have a different number written on the back (432) Vs 404 for the rest of the drawers. Given the condition (it got wet at some point, and the box joint on the right side bottom is loose, for example), the wood was probably so dark when the drawers were replaced that they figured it was walnut…if they cared. It's pretty beat. I'm almost of a mind not to clean it, but it is so sticky that I can't help myself. Three drawers waxed into cleanliness. I'm using J&J wax to dissolve the grime. I tried Isopropyl Alcohol to speed up the process on the first oak faced drawer, but it seems to be pretty aggressive on lacquer, not something I expected. Maybe somebody is going to come in and tell me Gerstner used shellac…not.

I'll have to snap a shot of that 22" by 96" by 4/4 piece of white oak, and post it. Looking online, you can make a board that wide by gluing up a bunch of pieces for around $200. He's had it in his attic for 25 years. I feel an A&C project coming on.
