Right type of sander

I know nothing about woodwork so sorry if this isn't the right place. I've cut up some tree branches and need to sand the bases flat, but really have no idea how to go about this. I assume I need a sander, but the only sanders in the house are finishing sanders which after trial don't seem powerful enough. Thanks for the help.

A belt sander would be the way to go on end grain.
What are you planning on doing with them?
Ok, time to go investigate belt sanders, thanks. I'm going to use them as miniature trees, everything else I tried looked and or felt way too fake.
