I picked up a Rockwell 653 Versa Plane 10A 3" hand planer with a carbide spiral cutter head a few months and finally got all of the parts in for me to restore it yesterday.

I replaced all of the bearings, belt, cord, brush caps, replaced all of the screws with stainless, cleaned the housing and then buffed the entire planer to a quick somewhat mirror finish and took 250 grit sandpaper to the cutterhead to remove a little bit of rust.

I stripped the handle and dust chute, put on 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of flat black, 3 coats of high gloss black and 2 coats of clear coat.

Before

Disassembly/Reassembly

new bearings & retention ring

new cord installed and cleaned field installed. The field and armature looked basically brand new when I removed them and still had all of the painted factory markings on them like they were brand new.

Finished

I polished the entire house with a buffing wheel on my grinder, drill and dremel and a little bit of white rouge compound. I have never really buffed anything on a buffing wheel prior to now, so I was pretty happy with the results.

Sharpening jig for the cutterhead

Sharpening bar and grinding wheel. The planer came with the sharpening jig, instructions for the sharpening jig and the planer.

Edge guide. I still need to polish the aluminum and strip the bluing on the still and redo the bluing on the guide plate.

Looks like it just came out of the box from the local hardware store! Great rehab! Waiting for the action shot/s.
The Versa-Plane is a true a gem of a tool. Great restore!
I've got a line on a Rockwell 126 that I might be able to get for $30. Hope to make it look as nice as your versa-plane does.
JUST AWESOME!!!!!!!!, I HAVE THE PORTER-CABLE 653,HMMMMMMMM
Looks great. The 653 is a beast. Many surfboard shapers used one over the years. It was considered a good choice for adjusting depth on the Fly like the skill 100. Most preferred the Skil as it was lighter and the adjustment was easier to manipulate. The Biggest Problem I have with the 653 is the cutting heads are getting hard to find.

Nice job Bree. I have the exact same plane. Where did you find parts for it?

Looked good to start, looked great done! Too bad someone engraved it. Make some curly cues with her!
A construction company I worked for back in the 1990s had one, even had the metal case. I used it a few times. Hanging 40 wood doors on site, and a few needed a bit of trimming off at the bottom…..to go over carpet.

Yours looks a LOT better than the one they had….

I ordered all of the parts off of toolpartsdirect.com. The planer is the same as the Porter Cable 653 Type 1 power planer. The parts diagram for the planer can be found here
Hi, my husband is working on his planer and we are need to find some blades, any suggestions.
GrizzlyHunter,

There is currently a 653 drum blade (Part #43291) available on Ebay for $69, you can find it HERE . It looks like it may need sharpening, but the blade doesn't appear to be chipped or damaged. It looks like a pretty good deal, since most drums I've seen go for over $100, even used & damaged.

There are some others on Ebay, but they range anywhere from $125~$175.

Great Lakes Custom Tool does make replacement drums for the 653 (Part #1000-S-2653-2200), which can be found on their catalog HERE , and they can be contacted at 800-873-4528. I haven't reached out to them, so I'm not sure what they want for them.

Ouch, I still haven't checked out the one up the road from me but it looks to be in good shape. In-laws didn't know what to get me so they gave cash, I can't think of a better way to spend it.

I finally picked up the 653 from the guy up the road selling his. I believe the only reason it sat on the market for as long as it did was he had it advertised only as a "versa plane" in the ad title. It's going to need a little clean up but functions perfectly and he threw in a bonus item for free, overall I'm quite pleased with my $60 investment.
