Red ironbark I assume?

I saw these posts sitting next to a skip bin this week.

As I have been working I didnt have the opportunity to enquire about their disposition, and each day as I drove by I wondered about them some more.

Plant Wood Natural material Grass Rectangle

So I rang the number on the house raising sign on Friday arvo and they gave me to OK to remove them.

Outdoor bench Street furniture Plant Outdoor furniture Wood

The are all about 150mm x 150mm and range from 1.6m to 1.8m or 6" x 6" and were used to stump the existing house, from what I saw they had cut them out and replaced them with metal posts and the house remained at the same height.

Why somebody would do that was beyond me as apart from some ground rot the were all looking OK.

Anyway ,I had to get a friend to help me load them and my wife and I hauled them off and inside the yard.

On the weekend I managed to move the smallest one by myself and so set to work removing all the nails and screws.

I then wrestled it into my thicknesser and removed the paint to see what was below the surface.

From the looks it appears to be Red Ironbark what do you think?

From some research I did the characteristics certainly point towards that specis, namely appearance, weight and their previous role.

I am not sure what I can do with them as they are way too heavy for me to be able to handle at my age!!

That looks like some beautiful wood, Rob you could cut it into smaller, more manageable pieces. Any number of gorgeous things you can make with that.

Rob in four words … "Buggered if I know." I can't resist that stuff either. My uses of the old stuff is mainly for carpentry around the place. For furniture, I go to the salvage yards a look for 150×75 hardwood bearers. They come in 5m-6m lengths, no paint and nails only where a floor joist has been and of course very well seasoned.

Ripping Red Ironbark on the table saw

OK I skoffed a few cans of spinach and musceled the red Iron bark post onto my table saw.

Did a cut reversed it and did another cut and that was enough until my son arrives.

What I got:

First up I fitted a new blade, as I knew my saw was going to be "workin" chewing through that monster.
Table Wood Gas Machine tool Hardwood

The saw actually performed very well, pity I am not as strong as I used to be.

So that was enough. It reminded me of when I tried to mill a log on my bandsaw!

Plant Wood Road surface Gas Flooring

I didnt take a picture of the first off cut but I can assure you its going to yeld some real nice timber
I estimate I can get four pieces about 150mm x 35mm and about 1.6 to 1.8 m rough sawn from the posts.

Actually there was a few more on the footpath later but I was not quick enough to beat the skip truck pick up.. rats!!

Cutting off some ends

I hauled one of the Red Ironbark posts onto a pallet and cut off the ends with the mortices and rot in them.

Light Guitar accessory Line Musical instrument accessory Font

The main reason for doing this was to have a complete length without any rot or previous work in them.

What I found has changed my mind in regarding to ripping them into planks.

They are the effective center of the original log and any material I rip off will be subject to cupping be the grain structure, as I wanted to maintain the maximum width.

Tangental sawing may be possible but will give me lots of sizes.

Automotive tire Human body Font Tire Automotive wheel system

My thinking is to to just thickness them and then use them in their close to original form.

Using the scrap off cuts as an example this was what I was intending to do with the complete posts.

I may end up just leaving the scrap off cuts and see what happens to them first then make a decision.
All a bit vague to me

Anybody have more experience with this type of activity? I would be interested to hear your opinion.

Crowie,

The portable saw must have been given a severe wake up call as I have not used it for years.

then all of a sudden its chewing through one of the toughest timbers we have here in Ozzie.

The timber is tough all right just check out the burn marks, and me after reporting I will do no more until my son helps me but I could not help myself.

So afterwards the blade was removed and give a good clean with white vinegar and a couple of nylon scouring pads as a reward for services rendered.

A reorder of two replacement blades has been arranged as the more I do with this timber the more I am motivated to use it regardless of the mass of it (meaning bloody heavy)
