I recently bought a Record 010 plane at an estate sale. At the time, I thought it was a #6 that I would be able to use. When I got it home, I learned (Thank You Google) that its a "carriage makers" plane. I'm new to woodworking and haven't decided what kinds of things I'll prefer to make, but I'm pretty sure I won't be making many carriages. My question is this; do I keep this and try to use it or do I sell it and buy something that I can use? Thanks!!

Also, if I should decide to sell it, what are they worth? I will post some pictures tomorrow when the wife brings the camera home.

Well, depenfing on how much you paid, you either did Ok, or you got stuffed. The thing is probably worth about $100.00 or more depending on condition. The current exchange rate is $1.65 per pound and a 010 sold there for 60 quid (pounds) just recently. Also, it is a rabbet plane, very handy. With a little work, it should be a top notch tool.

Mikey, I don't mind at all, but I'm not really sure. I paid $100 for both together. For me, that's a lot. I had been buying some "fixer uppers" at garage sales, but I never get the time to fix them up. My garage should be done this week and once I get the tools set up I wanted something to start playing with. I repeat, they are both much nicer than they appear in the pictures. Basically, they are dusty. There is a little bit of surface rust on the Record's sole and one side, but it should clean up really nice.

Depending on what you want to do, or what else you don't have, I'd be inclined to keep it. The 010 is one Record plane that I don't have so I'm not really sure how it'd be used, but I've got most of the other "common" sizes.

What is the other one? ..an 04 or 04-1/2? If you wouldn't mind, can you take a couple more pics from the top side? If one of them is an 04 or 04-1/2, those are real handy of lots of daily tasks.

Looks like it will flatten regular boards as well as carriage parts ;-)) I don't know why you could joint with it??

I,ve seen these used for making raised panels on doors and also roy underhill used one to trim some big tenons. Anant has one in their catalog. Really usefull for me, I would certainly keep it.

Thanks everyone!! For the time being, I'll put it aside and perhaps play with it just to see how it works.

Knotscott, the other plane is a #3. I'll try to post a couple more pictures later today. IIRC, I bought a pretty good #4 earlier this summer that needs to be cleaned. Luckily, I'm taking a class this week on how to tune planes.

Here are a couple more pictures. I think the picture of the adjuster screw on the Record gives an idea as to the condition of the paint. I haven't seen so much as a chip in the paint (is this what is meant by japanning?) on either of them.
