Long story short, I have an extra pool pump with a cracked skimmer basket. It looks like the whole thing has been left outside for years, but the motor still works fine. My thoughts were to build a bench grinder with the motor. Seems straight forward enough.

Has anyone used a pool pump motor to run wood working stuff? Does anyone know any reason why it would be a bad idea?

Thanks!

Pump motors tend to have different shaft types than regular C frame motors because of the way they attach the impellers, also the mounting might be different. If you can make fit, mount it, and put a pully on it securely, I don't see why you couldn't use it to power a grinding wheel on an arbor or a lathe or whatever.
