I wonder what stops it from sanding differently when harder wood is on the same piece such as a knot or other harder area. The paper floats with an air pocket under it and I would think that it would not sand the same on such a piece. Have you used one or seen them at a show where you could ask questions?

I don't know the answer to your question here however. larry

I have one and my rule is 3x width of the slot. Also be careful with the leading and trailing edges wanting to dip down into the sanding drum and causing snip.

I have found that the amount sanded off different species of wood varies, so I would assume that various hardnesses in the same piece would also vary in amount sanded off.
