So I'm a novice woodworker and I just received a lathe as a gift. I wanted to remove some rust from the chisels and read online soaking them in vinegar was a good solution. Having experimented with stains I should have known what effect the vinegar and rust would have on the wooden handles. Now the top 1/4" of the handles that was submerged and the steel is stained black. Any suggestions on the best/easiest way to return them to their former glory before my father shows up to give me some tips on turning? Mineral spirits?

I would use steel wool and oil or WD-40 to remove rust instead of vinegar. Have no idea how long it would take vinegar to dissolve rust or if it will. Can only guess it might remove or gum up whatever finish is on those handles.
